An Everett hospital was chosen to take part in a research study for a new treatment for meth addiction.
So far, doctors say results have been promising.
Curtis Letzkus has been through the Providence Hospital emergency department more times than he can remember for overdoses and other addiction-related issues.
“I’ve been in and out of this hospital for years and years,” he said. “One of my more lengthy stays was 67 days in the ICU. So, yeah, I’ve been here a bit.”
Among other things, Letzkus was addicted to meth. His disease caused him to live in a tent for 9 years. Getting clean was brutal.
“The withdrawal is really uncomfortable,” said Letzkus. “A lot of sweating and a lot of anxiety. Not being able to sleep for days and days. Fidgeting all the time. It isn’t pretty.”
Letzkus was far from alone.
According to the State Department of Health, the number of fatal meth overdoses in Washington ballooned from 54 in 2000 to 728 in 2020.
Nationwide, between 2015 and 2019, meth-related deaths grew exponentially to more than 15,000 per year, a 180% increase, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
While there are medical and chemical treatments to help people recover from opioid addiction there is nothing for meth, until now.

it gives drug induced adhd which is easily treatable with low dosages of ritalin for a few months removing it completely but the actual addiction is adhd they want to feel hyper and strong but actual sufferers of the genetic condition want it gone it's like a super car without brakes.

I wonder how many relapse in this program. Meth is so good, you never want to give that up. You can be walking around with holes in the soles of your shoes 👞 👟, but become a king as long as you are taking that meth.
So, what I am hearing is that this binds to the methamphetamine in the user’s system, and acts like Suboxone in the heroin user’s system. What, then, is the treatment for the dopamine desert (the horrible come-down that meth users face when they stop using)? If we can’t make sure that they get real treatment (inpatient for >90 days) what will stop them from waiting out the treatment, or finding another dopamine protagonist to replace the meth?
No, actually if you use things like meth in very small amounts and correctly, then it can be like some sort of super fuel almost and there's actually a number of people who have used it that way for years without problems they say..But there seems to be only ONE sort of 'responsible' way to use it ever, and that is just to do it only once in the morning and doing no more than say 1 or 2 hits, then Stop for the rest of the day and never touch it again for the rest of the day..
Please hurry up!! The mental health crisis is getting out of hand. Hopefully they can expedite live they did the covid vaccine.

What if the individual with SUD is treated for one particular substance but then develops a cross addiction? Science only goes so far before you have to treat the root issue of addiction the “spiritual malady “ everything else is a band aid. 🦉

4-6 years until treatment is "ready" for the #1 cause of death in Americans 18-49. Yet for a virus that kills far less they will shut the country down and give "emergency use authorization" for those medicines. That doesn't add up to me. If the reason we took such drastic measures when the virus hit was to save lives, and more lives are at risk from addiction, why do we need 4-6 years?
