I just started playing the first yoko watch game which is fun got game under £10, the cutscenes are great, so be like 3 or 4 games in uk have to look them up, never new there was a yoko watch anime. Great video.

That is so sad… The gameplay of 4 actually looks like they remedied my one giant complaint with the series, all the tedious touch screen battle mechanics!

Ugh, I hope not. The first 3 games were really well crafted in very aspect. For a while, it was a really successful franchise that even stood toe to toe with Pokémon for a while. It was so good. It's such a shame to see it fade out in a slow death like this when the quality of it should be sustained!

I think YKW being dubbed the "Pokemon killer" actually cursed the series to being a near-obscured outside of Japan. At its core it was just another popular monster-taming deconstruction of the genre, similar to Medabots (or even Digimon to some extent) when they were just gaining popularity. But because people (in the west) had this expectation that it would become the next franchise to dethrone Pokemon, even though Pokemon has a much more simpler, broader appeal compared to YKW's more out-there and absurd premise, I think that's what sorta "killed" the series.
Yokai Watch will make a return, no doubt. I feel like when the west realize that not every monster-taming franchise has to compete with Pokemon and embrace just having two cakes instead of expecting one to be like the other, that's when YKW and similar franchises like it will have any sort of popular there, even if it's niche.

Really happy you made this video Ed. When I watched Regi’s video I got depressed but your ideas gave me hope again I didn’t even knew this series excited until SWSH was out so the Japanese publishers really need to market their games in a much better way

Level-5 has been a beloved and influential studio going back decades, it's just always been better known in Japan and among jrpg fans

Man I hope not Ed. Playing Yokai Watch 1 for 3ds(I played the demo first), is what got me into the series. Never played Blasters, just the main games(except Pyshic Specters and Yokai Watch 3).
So this is a long issue with Level 5 to me.
They make 2-3 games of similar style and then switch to a new game/style. (The outliers to this being their Inazuma Eleven series)

When you started the video of reggie i was thinking: strange, I kinda know this voice, but I know it in german. Quick check of some of the german Content Creators and yes, seems like thats an english only side channel of RGE even if it was not mentioned in the channel Info.
As it's not a franchise I was much into, I don't think its dead unless everything related to it has disappeared.

I think that Pokemon made it so that the West just keeps comparing it with everything. We like to do that a lot. Look when a robot movie comes out with war in it ''must be Terminator clone'' some dinosaur attacking a city ''Godzilla look alike'' I think that if the West wants to expand from that thought, we need to stop comparing things to other things, but I don't think that is ever going to change. It's a part of our society to constantly compare to competition and it doesn't help when a copy or a clone is an actual complete clone. I definetly see a difference between Pokemon and Yokai.
I don't want fans to attack each other constantly because one franchise looks like the other.
Sales do tell quite a lot, but like we all know, there are always these extremes and weird anomalies in these numbers because of consequences outside the grand scheme of things. Like how a game is suddenly sold badly because of something happening in the world for example that influenced the sales, stuff like that.
Ed, do you know why Yokai is hated a lot? Is it really that bad? I do not know which is why I'm asking this.
i literally couldnt even buy yokai watch 3 physical cause there were no cards anymore which is a known thing obviously. i think its really really dumb to talk about the sales numbers of that one due to that haha. like yeah there was digital but i think the physical not being there definitely hurts the sales. i for example just didnt see the point in buying digital if i could have had physical. they just overdid it with the games by 3 which doesnt mean its "dead" as in theres "nothing coming" though. like i know theyre still doing things with yokai watch. so yeah its just not pokemon hot anymore if thats what they mean by "dead" then thats okay. i dont really see the issue with that tbh. funny thing is koma sans cute so i STILL draw him from time to time btw.

I feel there are two sides to the whole Pokemon Killer line. One side is a group of people who want to see Pokemon die and take over the market. The other side, which I think is much larger, is the side that wants a game like Pokemon that hurts the sales of Pokemon and forces the Pokemon Company to make a better game. This is why people so many people were behind the whole Tem-Tem thing. It was only popular because it looked better than what Pokemon was making at the time. That's why the term Pokemon Killer is still around and why people use it all the time.

SONY did the same thing to the PSP. I know the handheld wouldve done well if Japan just marketed of their japanese games internationally.

Right now, rather than demanding they localize Yo-kai Watch 4, I think we need to wait and see if Level-5 still have faith in the brand. I'm pretty sure the only things we got after 4 was an anime and a Gacha game.
I am still amazed how much content they put in Yokai games. Most of them are like 400h + of actuall fun writing.

Huge level 5 fan, and I gotta' say. I think it left a bad taste in Die-Hard jrpg fans/monster collector fans with the flop that Ni no Kuni 2 was compared to the Glory, and bar fans, and developers created with its first entry.
1.) No more Familiars. The new revamped combat system didn't make up for the lack thereof. …don't talk to me about higgldies and their convoluted combat system. No.
2.) No Animated cutscenes. Definitely was missed.
3.) Lisa Simpson. (j/k, he wasn't too bad… but a Drippy he was not.)
Don't get me wrong, loved NNK2. Had a fucking blast with their dungeon crawl DLC (played and beaten twice).
But it wasn't NNK1, and i think that kinda put off overall sales for anything made by lvl5. I swear they alienate themselves on purpose.
I mean Yo-Kai Watch always seemed like SMT but for Kids, after seeing Level-5 coming back at the Nintendo Direct (favorite thing from it besides Pikmin 4 and Metroid Prime Remastered) gives me hope that Yo-Kai Watch has a chance to make a comeback here in the west it’s always been my favorite monster taming series along with Monster Hunter Stories so I hope we see that comeback!
