On May 2, 2011, Osama bin Laden, the founder and first leader of the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda, was shot several times and killed at his compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, by United States Navy SEALs of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (also known as DEVGRU or SEAL Team Six). The operation, code-named Operation Neptune Spear, was carried out in a CIA-led operation with the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) coordinating the Special Mission Units involved in the raid. In addition to SEAL Team Six, participating units under JSOC included the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), also known as the β€œNight Stalkers,” and operators from the CIA’s Special Activities Division, which recruits heavily from former JSOC Special Mission Units. The operation’s success ended a nearly decade-long manhunt for bin Laden, who was wanted for masterminding the September 11 attacks on the United States.

The raid, approved by then President Barack Obama and involving two dozen Navy SEALs in two Black Hawk helicopters, was launched from Afghanistan, where U.S. forces were based, about 120 miles (190 km) away. The raid was 40 minutes long and bin Laden was killed shortly before 1:00 a.m. PKT (20:00 UTC, May 1). Three other men, including one of bin Laden’s sons, and a woman in the compound were also killed. After the raid, U.S. forces returned to Afghanistan with bin Laden’s body for identification and then flew over 850 miles (1,370 km) to the Arabian Sea, where he was buried in accordance with Islamic tradition within 24 hours of his death.[9]

Al-Qaeda confirmed bin Laden’s death on May 6 through posts made on militant websites and vowed to avenge his killing.Other Pakistani militant groups, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, also vowed retaliation against the U.S. and against Pakistan for not preventing the operation. The raid was supported by over 90% of the American public, was welcomed by the United Nations, NATO, the European Union and a large number of governments, but was condemned by others, including two-thirds of the Pakistani public.Legal and ethical aspects of the killing, such as the failure to capture him alive despite him being unarmed, were questioned by others, including Amnesty International. Also controversial was the decision not to publish any photographic or DNA evidence of bin Laden’s death. There was also controversy in Pakistan as to how the country’s defences were breached and the Air Force failed to pick up the American aircraft.

After the killing, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani formed a commission led by Senior Justice Javed Iqbal to investigate the circumstances of the attack. The resulting Abbottabad Commission Report revealed the β€œcollective failure” of Pakistani state military and intelligence authorities that enabled bin Laden to hide in Pakistan for nine years and was leaked to Al Jazeera on July 8, 2013.

  2. Looking at this and remembering how united our country still was at the time, it makes me very sad to see where we are now. Some Americans openly say they hate this country. They apologize for being an American. I have a very reasonable amount of distrust of the people in our government, but I LOVE this country and our flag. I hate to say it, but I think the days of this kind of unity and pride are long gone. I hope I'm proven wrong some day soon. GOD BLESS AMERICA β€πŸ€πŸ’™

  3. I was 31 on 9/11. For those that were kids when 9/11 happened I think they reacted the way they did to news of US getting him was like the boogie man from your nightmares being killed.

  4. It's not just that Bin Ladin had been killed, but the last thing he saw was the face of an American, eyeball to eyeball, and that American was going to administer justice for a whole country and there was absolutely nothing that he could do about it! U S A!

  6. To be honest I was jealous. I was Ranger and he wasn't near water. We wanted to kill that guy. I'll never honor him by saying his name. But we really wanted to kill him.

  7. I remember when this happened I was only 12/13 so too young to even know 9/11 hapoened but this I remember. I remember feeling extremely excited and happy bc of who we got the. I cried bc I started thinking about all those guys my brother in law introduced me to growing up since he was a marine and all the guys who had fallen and I thought about their families and I thought about what would they say? Why weren’t they here to see this? Why can’t they have families of their own since some of them were just 18/19 that were killed I didn’t sleep much. Then the next morning I had P.E. And the first thing they said before rollcall and the coach yells out with the biggest smile on his face β€œwe got him” and gave the most poetic speech from that man I had ever heard about what it meant to be a American.

  8. I was working at the US Air Force Academy at the time (I wasn't in the Air Force) Bin Laden was killed. I remember it taking about 6 times as long to get through the gate than normal, I'm not even exaggerating. The guards at the gate didn't know what was going on either, just that they were to search every vehicle and not just check ID's. Because my job was in the cadet area I had to go through a second checkpoint and that one took even longer than the first. The crew that I was relieving and even the cadets had no clue either. As the day went on we had regular checks from guards which is something they never did unless they wanted to use the bathroom or sit down for a bit. Around the time I was getting off shift and headed home we were starting to hear that something was going on in Pakistan. Shortly after I got home is when the news conference happened and it was confirmed that Bin Laden was killed. My roommate at the time (who was born and raised in D.C. and was living there when the planes hit) and I fired up the grill, cooked some burgers and drank some beer. For that brief moment it felt like the world was an ok place to live. I'll never forget that feeling.
