So The Last Of Us Episode 5 is now out and in this video we’re gonna be recapping the plot, breaking down the easter eggs and also talking about the game similarities and differences. As always this review won’t contain game spoilers until the end of the video and that’ll be for people who’ve completed both parts. Now we hop right off the back of last week which saw the introduction of Sam and Henry. We theorised last time that they’d followed Joel and Ellie and this is how they also randomly ended up on the same floor as they did on the skyscraper. This is confirmed in episode 5 and the entry centres around fleshing out their backstory along with Kathleens.
On the podcast for the show the creators stated that she’s like Madam Dufarge from a tale of two cities and she’s this very meek character who ends up becoming a vengeful ringleader set on getting revenge for the death of her family.
Now last week we missed that Tommys voice actor Jeffrey Pierce was playing the part of Perry and that Sams gun actually didn’t have any bullets in the chamber. Eagle eyed viewers spotted that there were two in the gun but he’d need to pull the trigger four times in order to shoot Joel.
Now in the game the pairs backstory wasn’t as fleshed out as it is here. In that their QZ in Hartford had been abandoned by the military and fearing that it could cause danger for Sam, Henry led them out of there with other survivors. They travelled into pittsburgh searching for supplies and this is when they were split from the group by a bunch of raiders.

I completely agree, in no universe do I see a character like Kathleen being a leader for a group like that. Her demeanor and characteristics don't feel authoritative what so ever.

The casting for the leader lady was some of the worst I've ever seen. I hated her not because she was a good foil to our protagonists but because she seemed as though she was reading off a script with no conviction behind her words. I never bought it when she was being ruthless and nonchalantly ordering the killing of groups of people. Felt like she just wandered on set or got the job from winning a gogurt sweepstakes. Took me out of the story everytime she was onscreen besides her death
Love can have "hugely negative effects"? Negative like… liberating an entire city from the fascists raping and murdering them, you mean? Kathleen was a HERO! Saying whatever she needed to to some collaborator FILTH is the most moral shiz I've seen all week. Yeah it speaks to her character. It lets you know she's a paragon of justice!
Edit: Also, it's maybe like Anne Frank… but Henry and the doctor would be nazis. They're collaborators. Feels kind of dirty comparing anything they do to anything the jews were forced to do.

The foreshadowing of Joel saying "it's easier for kids, they don't have anyone that relies on them" was like a dagger in the heart. The exchange between her and Sam that night would prove to be the real start of the true relatability between her and Joel – guilt.

I've watched all these videos on the last of us and I've gotta say Paul I'm disappointed not because of the content but because you have lock on aim in all the gameplay clips of the last of us it takes the horror aspect away of not having many bullets and making your shots count but apart from that good videos

The actress for Kathleen didn't do it for me. I have loved everything else about this show but she just didn't seem like the right fit.

Would y’all have told Henry About his brother being infected ? I felt as if Ellie Rob him of closer with his Sam in his final moment, something she’s obviously dealing with at the end of the episode
they should have given a concrete reason that kathleen was in charge. if she had a strong ethos the casting wouldn't have been a problem, but as is, i see no reason she would become the leader after her brother died. they didnt even give her a speech in front of the crowd at the beginning of the episode. she came off as irrational, especially when she ordered her people to look for henry against their recommendations. long haired military homie would have been in charge irl.

I love you heavy spoilers, but it was soccer first, and Canadian football which the states stole began in 1860s. it was until 1950s that futbol became used in place of soccer
Theory is the kid clicker, bloaters and rest of the infected are from Danny's and Ish's group. The bloater is probably Danny or ish. After Fedra pushed the infected underground, that group got infected and was growing ever since.
I'll make you a deal… I'll start calling soccer football, if you stop calling Kansas City Missouri, Kansas City Kansas.
These episodes keep getting sadder and sadder.

Why did the kid have a grown man voice?
They should have replaced Kathleen's screen time with more about Henry and Sam's backstory – maybe showing Henry making the decision to betray Michael for Sam, or showing how they lost their parents and Henry became Sam's primary caregiver. Kathleen was never really humanized for me and I didn't really feel her pain. She also never came across as this impactful leader for the group and that she could inspire the type of change they said she did. They could have removed her character and had the group of resistance fighters making decisions together after their leader Michael was killed and the episode wouldn't lose anything. It would still flesh out the story beyond the game's raider characters and make commentary on the nature of revolutions, and it would be overall more believable and immersive without Kathleen. The ending of the episode would be more impactful with increased screen time allowing us to connect more emotionally with Henry and Sam vs showing this random woman's vengeance quest that we barely sympathize with because we have such little connection to her or her brother and so much focus is on showing her attempts at intimidation and nonchalant ordering of executions. Maybe an actress with more charisma could've pulled off this revolutionary… but they didn't need this particular character addition to the story really at all and could've made better use of the run time. IMO all the characters so far are really complex and grounded in reality except for her, unfortunately. There were better ways to get the points and beats across.

I ALSO kind of thought the Kathleen was weak. Why follow her?? But at the same time I like the idea of maybe the soldiers setting their type of ‘one track mind’ to survive as maybe if she’s the brain and their the brawn and maybe she could lead us out if I fight behind her well enough type of idea. Also liked how they changed it and made Sam death to further emphasize how life as a kid would SUCK in this world especially if you have any type of disability.
When Henry looks up threw the window at Joel fighting the hunters, the laundromat orange signs reflection, makes a superhero mask over his eyes ..thought it was pretty cool!
Wait… So the "Bad evil lady" was right? WAS AALLLLL THAT SHIT FOR NOTHING!? 1. A "great leader and one of the kindest people with power still left" was ratted out and killed by FEDRA 2. One of the last doses to cure leukemia WAS WASTED 3. A One of the last and newly liberated AND INFECTED FREE CITY HAS NOW FALLEN! 4. Again using the whole episode to introduce us to characters for us to engage… AND THEY ALL DIE IN THE MOST USELESS AND OBVIOUS WAY POSSIBLE!! AGAIN!!! DAMMIT WE COULD OF HAD MORE BILL & FRANK, HE COULD BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW WITH THAT DOSE!! 😆

Probably gonna be an unpopular opinion but I was kinda disappointed with the episode. The Sam and Henry bit was great but I feel like they wasted the Bloater. It was the build up to the reveal and then nothing really happens. It was a good episode overall but I feel like it could have been better.
