Don’t destroy your garden! I learned the hard way what happens when you get a load of contaminated manure. Persistent herbicides like Grazon are no joke, and they can be in hay and manure and even compost. You can even age manure in a pile and the stuff will still come through and kill many of your garden plants! Twisting growth is a sign of it, and weird stunting.

Does it have a particular (sickly sweet) smell, the manure / compost / soil with the Grazon in it? I got some free compost last year from my municipality and it didn't help my garden at all. This spring, I'm smelling it in gardens all over town. Icky smell.

On the effects of pesticides on migrant workers. I was a research assistant For Mr. Owens. In the 1980s. The book was published and is called…. Peacocks of the field…. It's an interesting book. It should be read. He worked alongside the migrant workers for months and found A lot of health issues and sicknesses among the workers.

David, I've been using horse manure from a local horse stable. I don't know if the hay he feeds the horses has any pesticide in it. I use only the pile thats been sitting on his property for 2 to 3 years. After that period of time, I think any chemicals that may have been in the manure would have leached out, then when it goes into the soil of my garden, it further breaks down. I just put in a wooden deck in my backyard and they say to wait for one year for the chemicals to leach out before you stain the wood. I don't know any thoughts on it. Can you get the same amount of nitrogen from wood chips as from manure because I also have a source for wood chips and would rather use that than the manure if the hay is being sprayed. Anyone else can comment on this, I would appreciate any advice.

Contaminated compost isn't my issue, it is being drifted every year. Spraying that crap out of an airplane is the worst idea ever. I have to wait until my grapes show damage before I can plant my garden out. So frustrating, I lose out on a good month of grow time.
I say bombard places that sell Grazon with negative reviews giving detailed information. Places will stop carrying it if no one buys it.

Most of the time the feed store won't know if the hay they bought was sprayed. I buy the hay for my sheep from a local organic hay grower. I remember someone else that bought feed store hay for their rabbits and said the only thing that ever grew well in their garden was corn. I tried to explain the problem. (Happened to me when I lived in town and raised rabbits) I have been successful with a partial remediation with agricultural charcoal to help start the process to bind the toxins. When I build my new raised beds this is the biggest concern when I have to shop for a load of composted garden soil. The last load I got 5 years ago was contaminated with nutsedge so now I have to fight that. 🙁
Just watched a video the other day where a lady put straw mulch on her watermelons. As soon as the vines touched the straw, the whole garden died. Wheat, it turns out, is sprayed with roundup.
Omgosh, I think this is why I am having so many issue's with my garden this year. This is the third year for my garden in the same area. I have had beautiful gardens in the past plus great results from my large buckets, I used manure this year from local dairy, I have spot planted 3 times (large spots not just filling in few plants). Tomato plants in these large buckets some I used cow manure some I didn't, first thing in the morning I am going to double check the buckets that aren't doing good, I'm nearly positive they are ones I added manure in, one plant has already died. I have 2 separate garden areas, one has zero cow manure, my seeds for the most part all came up, that garden is doing much better than other garden, there is 2-3 weeks difference in planting dates and the plants in garden 2 are same height if not bigger. Thank you for sharing this experience and knowledge, I have been trying to figure out what on earth is happening.
I have a miniature horse. I do feed him commercial hay. I've never used his straight fresh manure in the garden, only the stuff that's sat and been incorporated into the soil. I've never had better results. In fact I dig out ALL the old dirt from my garden and replaced it with dirt from the pasture. I guess the pesticide isn't as big an issue in commerical feed? The package says it doesn't have any junk in it… So…

same situation with Roundup and glyphosate… winter of 2020 a farmer provided me a loader full of manure that had been in his field pile for 6 years plus and it still had that stuff in it my vegetable plants grew well but they didn't fruit properly and what fruit came didn't ripen properly so I got zero yield
What about the bags of manure at the big box store? I'm preparing for chickens, but they're still a little ways off and it will just be a small flock of layers.
I need nitrogen, people, and my kidneys can only make so much.

Ugh. You just helped me find the culprit in my tomatoes, celery, passion vines, salvia, etc…. Goodness I’ve tried everything this year, truly baffled at what was happening. I’ve never had such a widespread issue across so many different plants. It’s my commercial cow manure and hay bales. I usually do my own composting, but I just needed supplementary matter this year. This absolutely stinks. 💩

Not to worry, i feed my chickens Tidy Cat cat litter. Tidy Cat contains bentonite clay and charcoal. It will bind with all toxens including radio active fallout. I plan to spray my garden and field next Spring to bind and remove any toxens such as Roundup. It is ideal for compose piles because of its charcoal properties.
I use wheat straw for covering my beds. I am lucky to know a organic farmer. All the other farmers want to sell me wheat straw but I tell them absolutely not with the chemicals you spray. My channel is dedicated to almost dying from chemical spray drift and eating off my land. I watched a sprayer spraying yesterday in 100° weather. I am trying Korean natural farming Jadom so this year I will put in new beds using the Korean natural farming. Basically plant matter no animal products

How do you know the bagged alfalfa pellets don't contain Grazon?? "Hay" can be alfalfa, coastal, peanut, timothy, orchard or a mixture of these. So, is it alfalfa in hay bales only? Thanks.
Aminopyralids have a half life of 533 days which means it will take 1066 days or 2.9 years for this stuff to go away. 😡 BEWARE of all compost because my nursery ages their compost for only 1.5 years. My garden is slightly wonky because of this. Lessons: Ask questions first and perform a bio-assay test with beans and/or peas!
Edit: Lesson #3, tell everyone! Even if they're not gardening because they may want to start one day.

We make a compost tea from our horse manure and test it on plants before we put in garden. We go thru 20 to 30 tons of manure a year and have had a couple bad batches show up. Easy to do and will protect your garden and better than lab test and free to do. We also use the manure in our worm farm and this works great for that also.
How do you know if you hay has grazon in it?

Wow, sorry that happened to you and your garden, but glad that good things came from it. Anyway, I wanted to say if you get offered a load of beautiful manure and you want to know if it's safe, you can test it with a bio-assay. Grab a sample and grow something cheap and fast and sensitive in it, like radishes and see if they get twisted or not.

Vegetable coal could reduce the harms being caused. Or sometimes one could dump everything in one space which is not used for farming. Inject it also with coal and let it sit there for a couple years, maybe then it could be used and even be a good compost after years of some kind of microbiological activity.. Just some ideas.
