If you love Performance Take-offs, then you’ll love ‘Quick Climb Friday’ a car alarm killing, speaker destroying quick climbs from RAF Lakenheath. With a mix of ten F-35A Lightning and F-15E Strike Eagle quick climbs, prepare for an adrenaline rush.
The F-35s at Lakenheath are the A variant and they have some very unique characteristics of the three main variants. They have a ‘Vulcan-like’ howl and although they cannot hover, they are the variant of the ABC that can pull +9Gs. They are incredible to watch and hear.
RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing. Armed with four fighter squadrons which include the 492nd FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the newly reactivated ‘Valkyries’, the 495th Fighter Squadron.
We are also brining you an alternative viewing experience. We are on the opposite end of the runway in use, to give you a very unique experience and all being well, should a pilot request a ‘quick climb’, then brace yourself for a dose of FULL ON adrenaline rush. Runway in use was 24 but we are 06 end. When a pilot requests the ‘unrestricted climb’ or the ‘quick climb’, hold on to your berets!!!!
So what is an unrestricted climb or quick climb?
Typically referred to as an “unrestricted climb”, pilots will take off and accelerate to a high speed near the ground and then pull the aircraft vertically or nearly vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft’s cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a “quick climb” more usual. Unrestricted means no-limits.
Is a quick climb a performance take-off?
Not quite but this could depend on the aircraft and the country you are in. Typhoon pilots will always request a ‘performance take-off” (PTO) or “performance departure” but the Typhoon takes off differently. It does not need much of a runway and instead of blasting down the runway gaining speed at around 350mph and clearing the runway before pulling back on the stick for a steep climb, instead the Typhoon accelerates into the climb. So within seconds the Typhoon is already pulling up into a climb after whacking the reheats on. I can only imagine that if a Typhoon did a quick climb, it would end up on the moon. Note also, that I have heard a pilot request and unrestricted climb.
Why do they do unrestricted climbs/PTOs/quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron…oooohhhh yeahhhhh!
What is a ‘local climb’?
This is your standard departure, just a simple take-off
Although the base carries the name of RAF, it is in fact a UNITED STATES AIR FORCE. Historically, the 48th FW has been the foundation of USAFE’s combat capability and remains so today…it is known as LIBERTY WING. All aircraft belonging to RAF Lakenheath will carry the tail code LN. If you see an aircraft with different letters, then youve seen an aircraft from a different airbase….
So a little intro to the fighter squadrons:
492nd are the Bolars and Madhatters, they fly the F15E Strike Eagle
493rd are the legendary GRIM REAPERS. They were briefly deactivated with their F-15C and F-15D in April 2022 but have been requipped with the F35A oooooh yeah
The 494th are nicknamed the Panthers and fly the F-15E Strike Eagle
Finally, we have the ‘Valkyries’, the 495th Fighter Squadron who became the first overseas USAF to operate the F-35A…oooooh yeah! They were reactivated after 30 years on the 1st October 2021

Hello, Awesome footage! 👍
I have 3 questions because I want to visite Lakenheath in the next months:
1. Are they doing these unrestricted takeoffs on a daily basis or is this just sometimes and you have to be lucky?
2. Are they flying daily from Mo. to Fr. or are there times or phases where there are no operations.
3. Are there plans for new deployments like the F22s last time?
Thank you in advance. 👍

How common are unrestricted takeoffs from Lakenheath? Going there for a couple of days and am debating if that spot is worth it for the limited time I have
