Beware manga spoilers in this video!
After the death of Yamamoto, Kyoraku Shunsui is forced to take on the role of the Captain-Commander. While he may not have initially seemed like the right choice, in this video, I want to take a look at how his unorthodox brand of leadership was actually exactly what the Soul Society needed…

The Thousand-Year Blood War called for new leadership of the Gotei 13 and here, I want to explain why I think Kyoraku's unorthodox leadership was exactly what our heroes needed – but let me know your thoughts too!
if Yamamoto had a son and that kid would be in the same situation as in the anime, would that son get Ryujin Jakka? As it was confirmed by Kubo that a Zanpakuto spirit would be overwritten or mixed. Also, would the kid be the head captain or Kyoraku would still be the head captain?
just wondering, why did you think it'd be Urahara that would free Aizen? He can't go there as he is not a captain + Kyoraku JUST became the head captain, so I don't THINK there would be a chance for Urahara to do so. Correct me if I'm wrong
If not him, then who?
it's a really good touch that Kubo made by placing Kyoraku as the head captain. Because when Yamamoto stood as the head captain, it was all old Japanese buildings. But when Kyoraku stood in the same spot, it was a new and more modern Japanese style. That goes to show the change that Kyoraku did/will do
Let's look at the contenders for CC.
Shunsui: First appeared as the lazy, in love with in person behind him. Whom would throw away tradition if he found it wrong (indirectly saving Rukia). His fight with Starrk. Really showed he was Yamamoto second, even with his biggest mistake was letting his emotions get the better of him. Like you said how he basically told Rose and Love, too bad this is just the way it is. Even in the TBtP he reassured Urahara, trying to keep morale up.
Ukitake: He seemed too friendly and could be sick. His health (even if not shown a lot, but was hinted at) would not make him a good CC.
Unohana: We really had not much to go on, outside of people where afraid of her. With the Zaraki fight knowledge, she just wouldn't fit as a leader. I would still take her over Ukitake, but she just wouldn't be good at that job.
Byakuya: Of the Soul Society arc captains, he would have been my next choice. But he wouldn't be the right man to be the next CC. He would stick too the rules a bit much, even when trying to bend them. That how badly he was beaten by As.
Wild card Urahara: With the Visored welcomed back in, I'd have assumed Urahara was also welcome back. But since he wasn't a captain, I doubt they would have picked him. He would have been my pick for the next CC (after Yamamoto). He would do what needs to be done like Shunsui. I'm sure Urahara would have also gotten Aizen out to fight. Urahara was ok to force people to do stuff they didn't want to. I just think the only flaw he had, is too many captains wouldn't trust him. Unlike Shunsui whom they trust.
Kyoraku is taken to an other level of class once he became the head captain
They won… so, yes 🙂
Yes
In a lot of ways, he is the most fascinating character
I can't wait to see the anime do the Evil speech. I do not doubt that it will be comparable to Instinct, and Perfect.
All of this is simply wrapped up in this famous phrase, "the end justifies the means." And in war, no one is good and no one is bad. "Nuff said.
Its either unohana or him, so there is no choice after all
I think it was less that he overturned tradition but rather the threat was too great to argue. He literally flipped the situation on central 46. But it’s truely hard to say whether Yamamoto would act to this level or not. Bleach really rushed its finish line but I do hope we get a more full picture at the end of this.
He put Kenpachi and Unohana in a death match. Horrible decision.
I think that captain Unohana or Urahara is still a good choice or candidate though
Shunsui zanpakuto is really powerful but if the other fighter understands the abilities than is a great counter. That’s why he cheats by vaguely explaining his abilities.
Phenomenal video
He was one of my favorite characters before the promotion.
But I liked him all the more after because he understood, unlike the rest of the captains, that wars ugly and it’s not heroic and it’s not romanticized. He wasn’t scared to do what needed to be done and he wasn’t here to make the hard decisions.
Everybody criticized his choices but that’s a part of leader ship.
Everybody thinks that they could be the head captain until it’s time to be the head captain.
Do you think Central 46 would have made Byakuya the Head Captain if he wasn't out of commission at the time instead of Kyouraku?
those where dire times if he wouldnt have act as cold and calculative they would have been erradicated for sure.
I mean…it's not like there was any other choice. The only other choice would've been Ukitake, and it's obvious why he wasn't chosen. Sick and the right hand of the Soul King.
Why is this even a question? Mans legit had the balls to tell the Central 46 to release Aizen and help save the whole Soul Society. Without him, the Gotei would’ve fell apart. Right man for the right job.
He was the best man for the job. The only captain that never lost his cool and always thought 5-10 steps ahead.
I remember seeing all the captains in that first meeting and seeing his flashy pink kimono……and despite liking all the captains I'd seen more of…..I knew he'd be my favorite.
And Shunsui exceeded even my lofty expectations. He was the perfect one to lead them. And is still my favorite Captain. 🏴☠️
Yama would be proud. 🔥
Totally, a dark soul with knowledge and skill, yet he knows when to be nice, grim, or kind. A nice set of skills for the beggining of a good leader.
he also has good negotiating skills when he negotiates with Aizen until finally Aizen wants to lend a hand to help soul society. Even at the end of the negotiation, Aizen said to Shunsui:
"You really are a very interesting one".
Indeed a person who deserves to be a head captain.
Shunsui has a ruthless streak it shows when he is in do or die situations. He fights dirty while already being in his own tier of skills and power
personally i think byakuya would’ve been the right choice.
He's my most fav character after Ichigo in Bleach bcuz of his cunningness the man just spits facts he keeps on spittin
Why am I only allowed to like this once?
He's the perfect proxy for current gotei. A compassionate, caring, and high sense of justice like old Yamamoto makes a good and loving leader, but you also need to be cunning, opportunistic and willing to "dirty" your hands a little bit if you want your troops to survive at the end of the day. Just maybe not to the extent of original gotei 1000 years ago.
If you have any doubt for this Man's Quality, he is the one whom found out and shines the crimes of probably one of the most dangerous criminal of SS in the past too. Tokinada Tsunayashiro is the name and Kyoraku is the whole reason why he is pretty much scuffed up till now.
I really really still think that sacrificing your best medic in the thousand year blood war arc isn't the right move…
I haven't even watched the video yet and YES he was the best choice, and simply for only one reason, I believe he's the only person that will choose victory over dying with pride, so I believe he's the only person that would of thought to bring out Aizen, cuz without him they would all be dead
