10 Creatures That Should Be Commanders

Another installment of non-legendary creatures that I think would make great commanders. Make sure to vote on which deck I actually build.

  1. I always really liked Brutal Hordechief and the other cards from that cycle as a commander. They're super hard to fit into decks, because you have to already be exactly three colors and in the theme they're working with. Because as soon as you're 4-5 colors, you're just going "good stuffs" at that point. Fun and flavorful commanders are those that are played for one color and have abilities that use another. Really stretches your deck options.

I played Brutal Hordechief as deathtouch and indestructible tribal. Both keywords work really well when you control who blocks.

  2. I had a standard Mirrorwood Treefolk deck back in the day. Used things like Entangler to be able to block all creatures, and included spells like Captain's Maneuver.

The difference between this card's ability and Ward is that Ward counters the spell if you can't pay the additional cost whereas this tax prevents the spell from being cast in the first place if the additional cost can't be met.

So with Ward, the spell can still be cast, but the cast will fail, whereas this effect prevents the casting of the spell unless the tax is capable of being paid

That Jeskai Kirin from Kamigawa Neon Dynasty has a similar ability so it means that it's wholly seperate from Ward.

  4. Most of these do not feel legendary to me at all, except maybe Grand Architect or Havengul Lich. Cool abilities to build around, but I think you need to have a justification for your commander being legendary even if it's technically not (e.g. the Kamigawa flip creatures that become legendary). Maybe thats just me, but I feel like if you start making any old creature legendary just because it has cool abilities, it dilutes what makes a commander feel special: there is only one of them and they are a character. Each to their own I guess. I'll vote for Grand Architect for that reason, at least the art looks legendary. Interesting ideas as always though : )

  5. I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but I'd love to see your take on Oros, The Avenger for your underwhelming commanders series. There are so many directions to go with that commander (lifelink, deathtouch… Repercussion etc) but it's hard to fit them all in one deck! Piru is probably 'strictly better' but I love the art on Oros and it's a better deck building challenge.

  6. If I activate the tree folk ability more than once does it trigger more than once for the same instance of damage? For instance, If ideal 5 damage to my commander after I have activated his ability 5 times will it do 25 damage?

  7. Havengul Lich… for when you want to play Mairsil but don't want to inflict the table with the nigh inscrutable combos… or the requisite bookkeeping that would render the most pedantic of bureaucrats comatose.^^

On the off chance your group isn't ok with that… simply offer to play Mairsil instead.

  8. I'm at a loss as to what to do with Mindwrack Liege.
What it wants to do is play lots of big stompy red and/or blue creatures.
What it needs to do that is lots of small creatures to use as sack fodder for making all that colored mana (most likely via goblins and skirk prospectors/ thermopod and/or phyrexian altar.).
It is not only rather expensive to get out at 6cmc (and 3 of that colored), the 4 colored pips on the ability is almost crippling.
The upside is that, if you CAN somehow produce enough colored mana you can keep activating it, as long as you have the mana for it.

  9. 11:04 with Death Kiss you state creatures, either yours or your opponents', double in power, when you just finished reading off the card text where it specifies only creatures your opponents control double in power

  10. So deathkiss, I have a deck i call The War Profiteer. Its a group hug and goad deck that leans into card that trigger when a player attacks my opponents. Isshin is the commander for that deck so deathkiss goad a creature and then quadruples that damage.

  11. Havengul Lich is my favorite card in the game and I have had a rule 0 commander deck built around it for quite a while. My playgroup is cool with it and most people I tell about it, want to see it rather than give me grief about it

  12. The beautiful thing about commander is that you can go ahead and make any of these decks and just ask the next group you play with and chances are, everyone is gonna be ok with these.

  13. This one time I made a decklist for Charnelhoard Wurm begore realizing it's not actually a legendary creature. It would have used a lot of cards that made it essentially a massive tim creature with multiple tap uses. "It deals 1 damage to each of you, triggering it 3 times, two untaps I will use to make mana, third I'll shoot you in the face for one, which makes it untap, which I will use by activating this and that.."

It was so cool, and it was so crushing to realize the fact that nope, doesn't work at least in the legal way

  14. Rule 0, but something should be said about the amount of legendary creatures. Just slap a name and a title, now it is "important and unique," when most of the times they seem like signpost uncommons in a draft chaff pile

  15. So you mentioned that the tap symbol on a creature means it can’t tap the turn it’s summoned, due to summoning sickness. What about the untap symbol? Can I untap a creature the turn it’s summoned? E.g. can I untap a Pili-Pala for its effect, that was tapped by Grand Architect?
