The Mystery Of Topock Maze / Mystic Maze – The Amazing Archaeological Evidence – Geoglyphs or Mining

In 1978, Arda M. Haenszel of the San Bernardino County Museum Association provided the details of a โ€œgiantโ€ prehistoric earthen archaeological feature known locally in the area of Needles, California, as the โ€œMystic Maze.โ€ After careful consideration of the evidence, Haenszel found that the windrows of gravel are likely prehistoric but certainly do not form a โ€œmaze.โ€ Though her foundational work is seminal, the function of this approximately 100-acre site has continued to mystify, with strong evidence of historic construction associated with the railroad. Not previously considered is the archaeological evidence supporting a functional association with prehistoric agricultural activity. https://www.scahome.org/publications/proceedings/Proceedings.25Lopez.pdf

  3. Those "terraces" are nothing more than structures to increase the roughness of the terrain to prevent the landslide from reaching the dam that is further down the river, it is an old way of securing the terrain and they have filled with sand over the years… even some Australian aborigines used that type of terrace to plant crops, even though they were not entirely perfect for watering them through irrigation canals by filtration

  4. I don't disagree with anything put forward here, but could this not be the case of Indians in the area maintaining it thru the generations until they could not any longer (driven away, killed, assimilated)?

  5. Sorry to say, but the myth of the Topock Maze was debunked in an on-site archeological and documentary study and report published in 2011, by Ruth Arlene Musser-Lopez (Archeological Heritage Associates). While there may have been some older Native-American geoglyphs in the immediate area, there is no mention of any furrows existing on the site in the 1853-54 report by the Smithsonian's Whipple scientific survey expedition to the area. Records of railway bridge construction in 1891 by SM Rowe detail the method of gravel quarrying on the site, revealing that the furrows on the site happen to be the same uniform width (3-and-a-half feet) as the Buck and Fresno scrapers employed at the time. Modern claims by "the local Mohave People" overlook the fact that a previous generation of these same people were largely employed in this gravel harvesting operation, themselves, debunking later claims that this site was of any real "sacred" significance to them. Details of these operations were also recorded in magazine articles in the 1930s and 50s. Claims of this site being of any prehistoric origin began with Edward S Curtis, in 1907, "long considered unreliable in his stories of Native American culture", and a doctored photograph by Fred Curtis, taken in 1908, and published as a postcard in 1913, just as Needles, Calif., was beginning to see increased rail and road traffic, and would shortly after become incorporated into "America;s Mother Road", Route 66. The local high school changed the name of their yearbook to "The Maze" in the 1920s, as it all became part of local legend. I've even visited it, myself.

They myth of the "Mysterious Topock Maze" has been summed up by the more practical, less gullible Musser-Lopez as follows:
"In conclusion, whether commercial or mystical, the maze has been a valuable roadside attraction for over 100 years, and the controversy over its age, origin, and function is now irrelevant to its significance, whether historic or prehistoric. Its size and striking visual presentation, the legend and mystery, real or imagined, and the debate itself, all add to the importance of this site not only to the local culture, but as a national monument to American ingenuity and and entrepreneurial creativity. In the words of Randall Henderson (1956), 'It is an interesting relic of the trail-blazing days on the desert frontier, and as such deserves to be preserved.' All in all, it represents another of the great legends of American Folk and Native American history."

  6. It looks like irrigation for farming to me. I see rows like in a large operation. It is close to the river, wonder if they utilized the river to water stuff. That's what I see. Maybe it's just me. Think of rice paddies. Going through Idaho in May. Might have to stop and see!
    Edit..written during..lol

    But what do I know, I'm a dumbass…thanks Dime
