The Pokémon Company needs to truly expand and bring it more studios to handle the mainline games. It’s not enough to just hire a few extra people, they need new entire teams if they want to keep this schedule of 1 major release per year (2 in one year with Arceus and ScarVio). Expansion will take some of the pressure off Game Freak and let them give proper dev time to both new Pokémon games and fully new games.
I absolutely want them to keep making original IPs and giving Pokémon more time in the oven. Games like Drill Dozer are absolute GOLD, but get/got overlooked due to bad timing, poor marketing, and competing with themselves.
I was looking forward Little Town game, but I didn’t even realize it came out already because I haven’t seen a single advertisement for it ANYWHERE since it’s first announcement trailer.
But yeah, burnout is very very real. They obviously can’t retire Pokémon, but having 3-5 years between each new Gen release would be so healthy for everyone! A slower mainline schedule will NOT harm merch in the slightest. Side games, spin-offs, and the anime will keep people buying, and maybe we’ll get MORE side games and spin-offs. I need a new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and there is absolutely a market for Pokémon Ranger to be reborn on the Switch.
But also, the day Pokémon actually becomes a yearly release JRPG series is probably when I’ll have to stop playing new games, simply because of the time. I still have yet to actually beat Sun/Moon, or any game since, because they keep making new ones too fast for me to keep up, and it throttles my investment.
They really either need to switch to a more sustainable format (HD2D Pokémon WHEN?) or, if they are gonna stick to the big 3D Open World model, slow down releases to be more in line with contemporaries like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.
Oh no, so Game Freak begins to develop Technical shitty games except for pokemon :O
The thing is People think that Game Freak make bad Pokemon Games because they dont get enough time or ressources. But the fact is that Game Freak says when they want to release a new game and how much Budget they put into it. Because Nintendo, Creatures Inc. and Game Freak runs the Pokemon Company. They DO NOT work FOR the Pokemon Company they ARE the Pokemon Company. And just for protocol Nintendo don't say Game Freak what to do. Nintendo is just there so they have Game Freaks Pokemon Games exclusively for their Consoles but cant say anything. They work together but Nintendo cant say how do make a Pokemon Game as same as Game Freak cant say how Nintendo should make a Mario Game.
So Game Freak COULD be a Triple A Studio because they have much more ressources than every other Triple A Studio but they decide to be on Double A standard because hell knows why.
I think I've, if not played then at least purchased, every GameFreak published game I've seen since Tembo dropped. I say this with all the sincerity and reverence I can muster…none of them have even comparable stopping power to the most recent and community-panned, mainline Pokemon game. My favorite is probably Harmoknight, still have it installed on my 3DS presently, but I haven't even sunk a twentieth of the hours into that game that I did Pokemon Scarlet. And the newest Pokemon games are barely cracking my top five for the franchise overall. Harmoknight isn't even a statistical blip compared to Emerald, Platinum, HGSS, or B2W2.
It was a fun little rhythm novelty that felt like it showed an indie studio with potential: you tell me that came from a multi-decade veteran of game development with a pedigree that includes partnership in perpetuity with Nintendo, I see some kind of red flag. For a studio that has, at the time at least seven, generations of RPG creation experience, Little Town Hero was a confused heap of experimentation that boiled down to Rock-Paper-Scissors that could conservatively be called a slog to nowhere. Again, you tell me that's an indie studio on their first attempt, I'd have to give them points for trying something with at least an ounce of style in tow. But this is GameFreak.
I don't think it's unreasonable to say a studio with such a series of high marks needs to maintain those quality control standards and display their supposedly exhaustive knowledge of development and genre convention across all its productions, not just the flagship. Even said flagship has fallen into question in recent years. GameFreak does not feel like it belongs in the AAA gaming space, whether in terms of scope or general quality for a post-DS world. They are dragged into a theatre of impossibly high standards because of their cash cow, to the point there are many people who think they only develop Pokemon or that there are those who play only a single series of games not just from them, but in all of the medium.
Pokemon is the only thing keeping GameFreak from being known as serial underperformers, and even with it, they are rightly lambasted for lacking quality control.
So game freak will make more half azz games. 30 years give or take on Pokémon they have not even perfected the craft and now the want to make more games thats a perfect way to put money to the drainage. Just give Pokémon to another company that can get the job done or give it mod capability so the fans can give the finish touches like idle animations like stadium had or post activities. At least S/V QoL for making competitive Pokémon or shiny is wonderful now. Maybe this a tactic for perfect excuse when the games are not polish or finish.
Gamefreak is just a bad company.
They never got out of the handheld market, any game they made past the DS era has felt more like a tech demo with a pokemon skin slapped onto it. They don't want to hand over their cash cow because without pokemon Gamefreak would be dead in 12 months. They don't have the ability to make good games that stand on their own.
Is what I want to say. While I still hold that belief, I have a little glimmer of hope in my shrivelled soul that now masuda has gone there may be a future for pokemon with more love put into the game. Maybe the people in charge now can actually expand and try to just make a good game instead of chasing the dragonite.
My only problem with this is that Gamefreak is already stretched and are on tight deadline as it is so working on this gear project games will only make things worse
Also little town hero flopped miserably because while the game has cool ideas behind it, it also had fundamental game design problems I’ve seen 2 YouTubers try to play it and they were baffled by it. What’s even more strange the biggest mistake of little town hero could have been identified with a testing session so if this is a “passion project” and they didn’t give it this care then what are they doing to the Pokémon projects they’re working on
Understandable to be honest, imagine being stuck making what is essentially the same game over and over again for almost 30 years and when you do something different, your fans either don't care or straight up complain that you could have spent those resources in that other game.
In the time gap between Gold/Silver and BW2 they literally only released 1 game that was not Pokémon. It wouldn't surprise me if they were just tired of making Pokémon games, I've been thinking they've been for a while now.
It's not exactly a good look for a 33 year old game studio to only be recognised by one game either.
I would love to try Pulseman on the Switch. Big fan of Megaman games and would like to try it. Last time it was available for US was on the Wii so putting it on the Switch would be cool to try out.
GameFreak making other games besides Pokemon is a good thing sometimes because they can take a break from Pokemon sometimes especially how The Pokemon Company beats GameFreak to release a game at a broken state.
Until a Pokémon game is in discussions for being the best game of the year, they should either focus solely on making a good Pokémon game or let some other dev do it
It always send me for a loop to remember Gamefreak made Tembo
Morning
what about giga wrecker 2?
Tembo the Badass Elephant 2 when Gamefreak?!?!?!
They could just re-release drill dozer for me. Over and over. Just straight up no changes. Then maybe a nice 2d style and then 2.5 D 😅
I joke slightly but it is a stellar game!
Spot on Ed- they don't have to release games as often as they do- heck the anime or TCG haven't even changed yet so that argument falls a little flat. Especially after the structure of Journeys too- there's so much lore etc we don't need new regions.
Heck even the competitive game side doesn't need new titles each year as its always stretched them out over 3 or 4 years thanks to new rule sets.
That means the next Pokemon games will have even less effort WOW
People need to remember Game Freak only owns a split of the rights to the Pokémon Company. Nintendo owns ~33%, and Game Freak and Creatures Inc split the remaining %. If your main games are majority owned by other entities, it makes sense to want to branch out for your own success on the side. No matter how well Pokémon games sell, they still will only be a minority partner in the process.
Little Town Hero was a pretty great game. I'd love to see a sequel.
They don't even have time to finish Pokémon games nowadays. What makes them thing they have the manpower and time to finish anything else?
I imagine that gamefreak has a lot of cool ideas for games that they can't implement into pokemon, because big brother is breathing down their neck.
The problem is that Game Freak seems to almost exclusively bring in recent grads or people with minimal experience. There are tons of developers with existing knowledge for how to make games that perform, how to make open-world games that look good even with moderate performance, but they don't hire those people. Why not?
unpopular opinion: at this point id be happy if gamefreak just stopped making pokemon games altogether. we're on the switch now and their work just isnt what id expect from 3d titles on this kind of hardware. they dont NEED to be the sole pokemon developers.
Honestly, Gamefreak needs to take a step back from pokemon, work on other types of games and (this is the big one) LEARN how to REALLY make games. Gamefreak is not going to get another Smash hit like Pokemon with the current way they do things. The only reason it's as big as it is, is because it's been with us for over 25 years with very little main line competition. The games are starting to show exactly how dated their ability to make games is. They need to learn how to make a good game and then take that knowledge and experience and put it into Pokemon, then and only then will pokemon finally evolve into a proper triple A title.
Pokemon fans: HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS LESSON OLD MAN!!??
Gamefreak needs to take ownership of its crappy development.
I'm all for Gamefreak developping non Pokemon games. But please hire more people!!! Your current team can't even handle pokemon alone!
Bruh where the coromon update Mobile 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
It's understandable I think they should do that 2 studios working on pokemon games have the other studio Bandai namco I mean look what they did with pokemon snap they would be a great addition
Drill Dozer is master class in platforming so they have it in them to make other great titles.
Pokémon's issues are similar to that of Disney or they pumped out so much stuff within a year's time that quality control goes Haywire.
Not helped matters is that so many different companies are involved with the IP that with a limited developments on means that not everybody is bringing their A-game
NO MORE DEX CUT IN ALL THE FUTURE POKEMON GAMES!
