Not only would it make the 200-600 an f/4-f/4.5, I suspect the 0.71 teleconverter would work with the 16-35 GM lens as well. This would make it a and awesome 16-35 f/2 astro (which does not, typically require cropping) lens in 26 MP APS-C mode on the A7RV or A7RIIV. I’ll be curious if it increases sharpness as well, compressing the scene to APS-C mode. Pretty sure that tool will be in my bag.
I think the only reason that major companies don't do speedboost for APSC is that they want people to buy their FF camera, but now due to the age of tiktok and the camera market being hugely shrinked in size, now they just want people to buy anything no matter FF or APSC

Some lens (mostly zoom i guess) have the back element deep inside the barrel even when zoomed out. A focal reducer (speedbooster) would probably be possible by adding glass elements between the mount and the back element in the lens without increasing flange distance.
It's all cool and numbery, but anyone have guesses why Tony would just casually know security cameras "normal exposure time"? Just a thing to think about
Sony needs to update their APS-C lineup too and replace the a6100 successor with one the size of the a5100, then release one or two sharp pancake lenses
What a joke by cannon. My understanding of cannon DSLRs had very poor dynamic range vs other camera makers until like the 5d IV. Now with mirrorless with peeking, if you cannot get accurate exposure within 2 stops you should not be a photographer. Who needs 24 stops. 😂

Sorry Tony ….. but that isn't a 'sensor with 24 stops of DR' it's a composite of pixels exposed for different times. Physics and chemistry limits individual pixel sensitivity and I doubt 24 stops is ever going to be achieved in the normal sense.
Imagine if Canon puts this sensor in a G7 . That would redefine the whole camera world.
Great idea from Sony about the speed booster. The sales challenge is most aps-c users wouldn’t have the more expensive full frame lenses, but it’s great for those who are planning to upgrade. I hope Canon, Nikon and Panasonic will follow as well.
The sensor would be awful for images. Changing the shutterspeed for regions of the image will also change the image blur for these regions.
With stacked sensors and more die space per pixel there are better methods to increase the dynamic range. For proper computational photography we need way faster readouts anyway.
with the speeedbooster it would be interesting to use full frame lenses on a full frame camera with the speed booster on and shooting in crop mode for photos. With a camera like the a7r5 which still had decent megapixels in crop mode, this could be awesome.
About time they started making a sensor with variable gain !! I'm excited about getting to dial in iso for every pixel – then i can spend 2 hours in LR adding in my own highlights ! 🤣
Metabones, Viltrox and others make speed boosters for years, but for the price you can buy other apsc lenses. Every glass addition in light path decreases picture quality. There is no free lunch.

Security? People won't be happy till they have security camera in their bathroom and clearvue collecting data.
why not combining that with sensors stacked on top of each others and change native iso or exposure time ? each layer of the sensor is using either different ISO or different shutter speed.
Why not reversing the equation: instead of giving the level of output of a pixel at given iso, time of exposure and aperture of a lens not give the time that the pixel needs to reach a certain level of output for each pixel at given iso and exposure ?
Well the increased dynamic range should make it easier to take moon shots with foreground.?
The new Canon sensor sounds analogous to what Apple has been doing with ProRAW / computational exposure blending, but more integrated into the camera hardware. Perhaps Canon (and others) might incorporate ProRAW (instead of their proprietary RAW formats, which no one likes) because it's an open standard.

Sony speed booster seems interesting. I shoot POV video like an action cam so I need a good full frame for a Laowa 9mm. So I use a Lumix S1. But switching to Sony apsc with speed booster and Laowa 12mm seems interesting. But will I lose too much dynamic range going from S1 to a6600?

Canon makes a full frame to APS-C speed booster. It also converts EF to RF. They originally released it as an option for a C70, but you can mount it on any RF body and put any full frame EF lens on it to get the same full frame effect. It's been out since the C70 was released, and that's been a while.

Yep you are talking nonsense about speed boosters. They have been around for years and years though mainly from third party manufacturers like Metabones. You also failed to mention one of their biggest advantages in that they make the lens brighter, by at least one stop. Unfortunately they also make an already large full frame lens even bigger on an Aps-c camera.
Yes please on the speed booster. I love my a6600 and it would be a good match for me. I could see myself purchasing some of the full frame lenses if I had this. Versatile system-yay!

Fuji had a better idea with EXR, but they should also ad an option of different timing like 1st and 2nd courtain in flash photography, not only just a different gain.
The only advantage for the 500 would be a great price. But if it is expensive like the others what’s the point. Now make it a $4k lens, I’m in.
a global shutter probaly could access a sensor regions that gets a lot of light
while the others still recording in different sensor regions
the smartphone often use a more classic trick it just takes pictures while holding the camera in different shutter speeds
and then stacking the images together
its a step into the right direction as cameras have to compete with the smartphone or in the end smartphones take over
and rather like professional people use a classical camera
and even if the professional would run around with a camera without that "tricks" he would have a hard time , while "smartphones" just hold around their phone and the professional camera user is making all kind of mind steps that he need to take a picture

With variable shutter speed at pixel level, won't image of moving objects possibly end up … weird? (tho perfectly fine for stationary scene)
I'm very curious about the speed booster. I only have FF Sony bodies, so it doesn't really fit any use case for me. However, I might use it stacked with my ETZ adapter for the Z50 or the Z fc. If this rumor holds any truth to it, I am excited about the possibilities of opening the door for 3rd parties to have a similar one for Nikon Z maybe!
That Sony E2E speed booster will be 2000$ => problem solved, just buy full frame it will be cheaper.

DR is moot for digital photography, just expose correctly for the entire range of light in scene.
