Germany says “nein” at Ramstein & China plays both sides | Ukraine: The Latest | Podcast

Today, as the long-awaited Ramstein summit begins, we discuss the very latest political manoeuvrings in Germany and elsewhere – from the latest military donations to Ukraine, to the war of words fast-developing within the European alliance against Russian aggression.

Plus, it’s Chinese New Year on Sunday, so an opportune moment to re-focus our attention to a country playing an increasingly important role in the war. We talk again to the Telegraph’s China Correspondent, Sophia Yan.

  1. Those who think the US should provide the M1A2 Abrams tank to Ukraine (alongside European MBTs), need to consider only the Abrams runs on a jet turbine power plant vs diesel engines from Europe. Huge difference in maintenance issues. Big advantage for Ukraine not to have that headache in the mix. US: please send ATACMS!!! Europe: send Battle Tanks!!!

  2. The de-industrialisation and depopulation has been a great success and we hope the demilitarization and de-nazification continues. When all these objectives are met, Ukraine will evolve into a peaceful and prosperous nation under an honest and incorruptible government. Keep up the good work.

  3. It is a worry that Russia is prepared to keep supplying “endless” numbers of soldiers into this conflict.

I wonder if this big increase in manpower will be a big factor in the outcome of the conflict, or will the Allied technology overcome the numerical advantage ?

  4. Re: the possibility of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine – the Russians know that Crimea without a land bridge to Russia and a dependable water supply isn't economically viable. So, just keeping Crimea alone won't work – they have to have water and a land route back to mother Russia for it to work.

  6. As Germany stares down its own history eighty years later through the psychopathic dictator in V. Putin, it must -and will, do the right thing and send him straight back to hell.

  7. For a host of reasons the U.S. does not want to send the Abrams tank. With no offering from the U.S., no offering from Germany (tanks that is). The Abrams is not the only tank it (the US) might offer. 1000's of M60 Pattons (a cold war tank) are available all round the world. Offer to buy back this tank from U.S. allies, 'back-fill' with newer Abrams to allies. Refurbish the M60 Pattons for shipment to Ukrainian forces. This breaks the 'log-jam' (or 'tank-jam'?) with the Germans suppling their tank… from Poland? Old IDF saying "The best tank, is the one with the best crew".

UKRAINE WANTS TO WIN AND REMOVE THE RUSSIAN THREAT TO EUROPE!!! BIDEN, OBAMMA, TRUMP ALL LET RUSSIA HAVE ITS WAY IN UKRAINE!!! NOW IS THE TIME TO GIVE UKRAINE(THE FRONT LINE NATION)

  10. USA HAS 3000 ABRAMS IN STORAGE!!! THE USA COULD EASILY GIVE 300 ABRAMS TANKS(THE BEST TANKS IN THE WORLD) TO UKRAINE..
WITH 300 ABRAMS TANKS, 300 BRADLYS AND 200(UKRAINE BUILT T90) UKRAINE COULD RETAKE THE CRIMEA AND DUNBAS AND DEFEAT THE
THE RUSSIAN BOARDER FORCES!!! PUTIN WOULD HAVE TO STOP THE WAR OR BE DEPOSED BY THE MILITARY AND HIS(SOVIET) LEADERSHIP!!
NOW IS THE TIME TO GIVE UKRAINE ENOUGH FIRE POWER TO DEFEAT THE RUSSIANS NOT TO HOLD BACK AND HOPE FOR A KOREA STYLE STALEMATE.

  12. It seems that NATO military intelligentsia (aka, the US Neocons) is more willing to "fight" for Ukraine than the Ukrainians themselves.
Question: if Russia is really a threat to Western Europe like the BBC, CNN, Sky news make it out to be, then one WOULD think that the Brits, Americans, French, Germnans, Italians, etc, would all need to send in their own troops into Ukraine to defeat Russian troops. That's what Vietnamese did during the Vietnam war, defend their country against a supremely superpower, and defend at all cost the Vietnamese did. But it appears that Western Europeans and the Brits do not want to fight but rather encourage the the Ukrainians to fight but most just want to flee Ukraine. I have always found it a little cowardice to encourage others to die for your belief.

  13. Go ahead Poland. Send the Leopards now! Just do it! A rumor/story goes that Russia systematically have collected and produced bad stuff on german leading officials through out the years. These german officials could be severely compromised by the russians if they release the Leopards. Could that in fact be the case?
