The Cold War: When nuclear weapons kept the entire world on the edge of M.A.D. – Mutually Assured Destruction. As Russia, China and the USA flex their military muscles on the global stage today, ‘M.A.D. World’ takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War.
In this episode:
– The USSR holds Berlin to ransom by blocking all land routes into the city. Berlin is
saved by a continuous stream of aircraft flying in from the West bringing food, fuel and
other supplies.
– The small countries of Western Europe form a military alliance with the USA to protect
themselves from the enormous military might of the Soviet Union. The NATO agreement
states that if one member is attacked, then all signatories will defend that nation.
– The West is terrified to learn that the Russians have successfully tested their first
atomic bomb. Both sides now have the most terrifying weapons ever created; but no-one
wants to use them. The nuclear stalemate begins.
– South Korea is invaded by the communist North starting a 3 year war that will kill 10%
of the Korean people. United Nations forces are used in action for the first time to
defend South Korea and President Truman makes preparations to use atomic bombs if necessary to win the war.
– An atomic bomb a thousand times more powerful than Hiroshima creates horror and awe
when it is tested in the Pacific. The world now has a weapon that can wipe out almost
all life on the planet.
– As the frostiness of the Cold War sets in, both east and west are scared of losing military and government secrets to the other. A network of spies and defectors develops and
causes paranoia on both sides leading to show trials, imprisonment and assassinations.

You would have to explode tens of thousands high-yield, if not hundreds of thousands of high-yield nuclear weapons across the world in a grid pattern to have any chance at all of impacting all life on the planet it's just not feasible….. Even a full-on war between United States and the former Soviet Union would have merely inconvenienced the southern hemisphere for the most part….. Northern hemisphere would been impacted severely but still people would have survived it and nature itself would have had no problem with it in the long run…. To say that nuclear weapons would wipe out all of mankind on the planet is is hyperbole for the most part and the fact remains that you just couldn't accomplish the eradication of all life on earth. It makes great headlines, makes great storytelling. But it is just a complete a complete fallacy to buying into the terror, the horror, the panic of the Cold War….. It sells a lot of books, sells a lot of emergency food preparation equipment, it sells a lot of personal fallout shelters, it sells a lot of everything BUT DOWN TO EARTH COMMON SENSE…Got a tornado shelter?, you're halfway to a fallout shelter, just add some more dirt and proper supplies for five to seven days and hawala you got a proper shelter in case of a accidental nuclear detonation or limited attack..

Great documentary but change the title. It's misleading. This isn't about the H-Bomb, it's about the Cold War. The H-Bomb isn't even mentioned until 42 minutes in.

Unfortunately, the political left had white antted the UN at its inception. The Western leaders had no option but to weaken the UN from the word go. It would have been a communist dream for the UN to subvert the rest of the world to communism and its evils. Even today, the UN has very little real power and is hopeless in resolving conflicts. UN peacekeeping missions rarely are finalised or wound up as completed. It is a bureaucratic body that only wants to gain financial support and delivers very little in return. I personally do not support any UN or UN related charities as they are politically ambiguous and appear in the cold light of day as far left socialist.
