This video is about the fascinating story behind How BEETHOVEN Invented METAL MUSIC. Many metalheads claim a relationship between classical music and metal. Is this just a way to legitimize music most of society despises tho? Well, as it turns out, Ritchie Blackmore of the band Deep Purple used Beethoven’s 5th Symphony to write one of the most popular guitar riffs of all time. I’m talking about SMOKE ON THE WATER. Also known as 0-3-5. Using Bach’s concept of INVERSION and RETROGRADE, Lord Blackmore worked out a new idea from Beethoven’s FATE THEME. Many historians actually peg the beginning of Metal Music with the release of Black Sabbath’s first album in 1970. Although Black Sabbath is clearly more influenced from BLUES, even they used pieces like Gustav Holst’s MARS THE BRINGER OF WAR to inspire their compositions.

  3. I'm sure every classically trained guitar player has stolen all kinds of great stuff from Beethoven and Bach. You could probably sit with Randy Rhoads's ghost all day long and listen to him talk about all the classical influences in Diary of a Madman alone. In fact I've always seen a TON classical influence in Children of Bodom's music, some of it very much like this particular symphony because they have a lot of movement between the dark and light sounding stuff. A lot of "purist" death metal heads despise them for it, as a matter of fact.

    Examples: In Bed of Razors, there's a really light, sort of Renaissance-inspired riff around the chorus that seems out of place at first but if you listen to if a few times it really grows on you. Same with the keyboard solo. The VERSE AND chorus riffs in Children of Decadence – possibly their greatest song ever imho – is another good example.

I remember when I first heard Beethoven fifth symphony when I was very young and I thought there was something about this which isn’t quite classical it’s very dark and very heavy and almost reminded me like rock music and then obviously when Richie Blackmore did the interview about smoke on the water it all made sense Beethoven was basically heavy metal🤘🤘🤘
