I really think the Hotone Ampero Stomp is a bit underrated – each time I turn it on I am pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to dial in pretty decent tones, and the range of amp models rivals some much more expensive modelers….

  1. Find a modeler that works for you at a good price. The current modelers available are capable of great sounds, some better than others, some better for certain types of sounds (clean, crunch, hi-gain, etc.) than others.

    I have a digital modeler I like; I have a versatile 4CM effects and digital/solid state amp rig I like; I have tube amps I like…

I have a new 100W tube amp head out for delivery today, and plan to get another 100W tube amp head in the near future.

While I enjoy my digital modeler and smaller rigs, still nothing like a 50 – 100W full or half stack for what I like to do on guitar. Yes, it's loud, but they make ear protection. 😁

  2. I wanted dual amp possibility and using my own IRs. This is my first digital platform and only use it at home in my " home studio " which means via my headphones or monitors. And for that it is perfect for me: it plays and responds like my real amp and the basic sounds are solid. I could buy an Valeton, Zoom, Helix, Headrush but somehow wanted something not so popular 🙂 For now I am good although updating some of the effects would be nice once in a while

  3. Have been using this unit for the last year or so. I've added an ampero control to add midi control, an ampero press for controlling volume/wah and an ampero switch because I had one.. I have an OC3 before the stomp, and a ditto looper in the FX loop.

Like John says, dialing in a good sound takes next to no effort. I play bass primarily, and noodle around with guitars. All Sire or Ibanez. Haven't sounded better in the nearly 20 years that I've been playing!

  4. Thanks for the overview and demo. It's good to hear your thoughts on this one.
I have this device, and as a bedroom player, hobbyist it exceeds my expectations.
Totally fullfils my needs. I've never played with any other modelers so I don't know enough to compare. But running it in stereo through two fender Mustang gt amps and it sounds super high-definition and responsive.
    Thanks.

  5. The tone did not blow me away. I would spend a few hundred more and get into a lightly used FM3- worlds better. I do wish however Fractal would update their interface and get with the times. The PC editor is fine and they remain the tonal king. The on unit experience however, dare I say on all their devices leaves much to be desired. It's like the 80's are calling. They should learn from Neural. They also do not have capture or touch screens or a great looper or large scribble strips like the QC has. I am optimistic they will address most of this with future models. They really need to. I still easily prefer Fractal over any other modeler even with these shortcomings. I mean even the Hotone Ampero Stomp has a touchscreen. Come on now~!

  6. Fully agree with you. I have the previous version and the amp modeling was already really good. Some effects were not as great as Line 6 (pitch shifting notably) but it is a great unit to practice. I also preferred it over the Mooer line. The Mooer GE sounded good for high gain but felt very stiff and did not respond well to dynamics / volume. The Hotone feels pretty good in terms of player response and cleans up relativelly well. I compared Hotone's pream models to several of my tube preamps and found it sometimes difficult to distinguish them.. The only points that I don't like are the presets which where junk (got better with Ampero 2) and the cab modeling which I replaced with IRs anyway. I would recommend it easily for someone who wants to edit its own sounds with a good quality/price ratio. If you just play presets, Choptones or others have nice preset packs that can save you a lot of time.

  7. Looks like Hotone has done a good job with this unit. Can the Touch Screen be controlled with the knobs instead of by touch?

I hope the Line 6 Modelers get an updat to HX Edit that also graphically represents the gear it is emulating, and includes some information about those pieces of gear for reference.

  8. Having owned the original Ampero I would advise to go with the Line 6 Stomp. The longevity of the original unit left a lot to be desired (in my experience) and system updates rarely went smoothly. This isn’t isolated either, I follow their page on Facebook and there are frequent posts from users who are experiencing faulty units.

  9. I definitely had the time of my life watching the first few mins of the video haha.. would love to see you go for a full on Eric Johnson clean or lead tone with this pedal one day.

One of the things I like about this form factor is that if something fails (like an expression pedal for example), it's easier to replace that one part of the chain rather than the whole thing. Same thing if you use a MIDI controller.. you can use it for this, or use it for something else.. or both. You can unplug the expression pedal for this and use it with a different fx or delay pedal. If you buy these at the right time you can pick them up even cheaper, and they are already pretty cheap compared to the high end brands. The hardware itself is really high quality, there's nothing cheap about it. There's a lot to choose from these days in terms of all price ranges. I prefer Fractal and Quad Cortex overall but they are super expensive in my country and I really like this Hotone stuff as a decent middle of the range option. Custom IR's open things up even further, and also.. using IRs instead of cab sims reduce the latency. Having a decent amount of IR slots and the ability for dual amp customizable chain is nice to have in this price range. It's also got a bit more DSP capability compared to HX Stomp.

  10. I’m considering something like this but correct me if I’m wrong, line 6 has one of the biggest communities/ecosystem as far as preset making and sharing? That could be a much bigger attraction to a helix/hx stomp unit

  11. I really like my Ampero II Stomp. I've been using it more than my HX Stomp lately (with one of my bands and at most jams), mainly becasue it is much easier to dial in, and it supports a 12 block signal chain, allowing me to have fewer presets with more effects / amps available at once. The lack of snapshots and other control functions (Line 6 controllers for example) is very unfortunate, but I suppose with a good MIDI controller you can simulate them by sending a stack of bypass type msgs from one footpress. I do hope they come out with a solid and extensive update this year – as you mentioned, updates have been minimal. Also, the pitch effects are very weak, but the rest of the effects are quite good, and the amp models are very very good. I still use my HX Stomp for one of my bands, but if I had to, I could certainly replace it with the Ampero II Stomp. If you have an HX Stomp, you might or might not want this as a replacement. But if you are abou to buy something, the Ampero is like $200 cheaper than the HX, and competes reasonably well. If they added snapshots and more extensive MIDI control, I would sell my HX and get another Ampero as a backup device.

  12. I hadn't previously done very many dual amp presets in the past. But after your video on the AC30 duals wanted to give it a try. 3.5 makes it easier to utilize more DSP. Love it!

  13. It does have its limitations and pain points, but aside from sounding as good as the high dollar modelers, I think it has a unique feel thing going on. It just feels good to play through. Great video John

  14. Yeah the usb c is VERY dodgy. Here in UK anyway. Poor connection. Lose connection a lot. Had 3 units and ALL the same. Different cables as well. Aside from this if you do not use the editor then OK. Managed to update ok. USB very weak. Sounds etc are very good.

  15. What I still don't understand is why they did not include in Ampero 2 stomp all the Xtomp Effects….there are so many great qualities FX missing in Ampero 2. I truly hope that after ending the development of Xtomp they put all its effects on Ampero 2 in the new Upgragde. I find the sound a bit better than Pod go and for gigging I use it together with 3 or 4 analog pedals 😉

  16. I've had quite some multi fx pedals, from Zoom, to Mooer, to Boss CORE1000, but I never connected with any of them. I've got the Ampero since last weekend and I haven't stopped playing it over the past 5 days for a couple hours a day. The accessibilty really got me I think. Huge fan of how clear the lay-out is and the feel of the touch screen.
