People will remark “isn’t that a coincidence?” in a knowing way that suggests they don’t think it’s a coincidence at all, and conspiracies abound that many coincidences must therefore be the exact opposite. But despite that, the world is still rife with true coincidence, things that seem like they have to be related somehow and just aren’t.

Leonard Dawe, British headmaster, was investigated by MI5 over crosswords he had created for The Daily Telegraph – not merely once or twice but multiple times!
It began in 1942 when the word "DIEPPE" appeared in his puzzle the day before the Dieppe raid in France, continuing as "UTAH", "JUNO", "OMAHA", "NEPTUNE", and "OVERLORD" (all code names for Normandy invasion groups/plans) appeared in puzzles just weeks prior to the D-Day landings.
It wasn't necessary for the word "dog" to exist at first because a dog is a tamed wolf and people took a long time to have wolves as tame companions. Even today, the word "dog" can create loathing for someone who's used to mangy, rabid dogs scrounging on rubbish dumps in poor nations compared with the feelings that the same word evokes in a family where the dog is a family member who gets introduced to visitors. "This is Auntie Janet, and Uncle Bill and this is Rover." And visitors actually say, "Hello, Rover".
Not sure the medical symbol one counts as a coincidence if the popularity of one is based on the other.

Last year I was going through my shop gathering up the stuff to build a lichtenberg machine for fractal wood burning when my sister called and said she saw this cool thing on YouTube about fractal wood burning and I should gather up the stuff to make a machine and that's exactly what I was doing when she called me!

That Target one is simply Australia stealing it from the U.S. You mention that they were only found a year apart, but act like planes didn't exist or people didn't travel too far, fast. It was the 1960's not 1860's…
I work for the company Walgreens. People often confuse it with Walmart or think we are somehow related and act as if we are related. We have no relation. Walgreens was founded by Charles Walgreens. Walmart was founded by Sam Walton. Nothing more than a coincidence both men had Wal in their names.
Kmart and Target in Australia are both owned by Wesfarmers which considers Target a part of "the Kmart Group" according to their website.
Aussie Kmart has even opened a bunch of stores quite successfully in the US under the name Anko.

As to the Agatha Christie story, the same thing happened to the writers of the movie Wargames. They were spot on in far too many technical details for the government's liking and were questioned for days. For them it was just logical reasoning and practical sensibilities that got them intuitively to the same places as government think tanks, researchers, and developers.
Americans don't speak a real language. Urb instead of herb, anees instead of anise. English is 3 languages molded together, American is 4 languages at war with each other. I know English is a bit ridiculous in language terms, but American English is ridiculous with downs syndrome.
I know at least 3 completely unrelated guys named King. It's a very common name in the U.S. not.a big deal
The name of the American and Australian company's called ' target ' and using a bullseye is even more coincidental to me because me and my wife went on holiday to Corfu in 1984 and the package holiday we went with were called ' target ' and their logo was also a bullseye, they went bust the same year.

Anise and fennel are closely related to each other tbh (both in the genus Apiaceae), but not to "star anise" nor licorice
