Music and Mental Health Episode 1 with Phil Aston

Music and Mental Health
This is episode one of a new series inspired by comments from my Patrons and Subscribers.
I use the phrase music is the healer a lot in my videos and I wanted to explain why I think it is. I have experienced anxiety many times in my life and at other times felt I was walking through treacle to get anything done.
This series of videos is designed to help others realize and experiment with the power of music to make you feel more aware and a live.

Music will change the atmosphere of any room or place it is played in. In turn that will change how you think and feel.

Ley me know what you think in the comments below ot if you want to get in touch with me privately you can contact me via the Now Spinning Magazine website.

  1. Hello Mr. Aston!
Thank you for this video. I absolutely agree with everything you said. We all have ups and downs but luckily favorite music can uplift our spirits. I often feel a bit down or anxious, and during such moments I lose interest in everything…even putting on some music takes a lot of effort. But in the end, I feel much better – music is indeed the healer! One of my go-to albums that I listen to when everything's just not working is Dream Theater's 'Octavarium'. The title track is like a warm blanket. To be honest, even now I feel a bit sad, and I need a good dose of rock music. So tonight I'll be listening to a Norwegian heavy metal/prog metal band called Conception. Perhaps you too would like to check out this band. I highly recommend their albums 'The Last Sunset' and 'Parallel Minds'. Anyways, sorry for my lengthy message. Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy watching your videos – please keep up the good work. Wishing you and yours a very healthy and prosperous New Year! 🙂

  2. Hello Phil, when this video appeared on your patron page a few days ago, we wrote a lot about the topic, will confine myself to a few sentences here. I had a difficult childhood and youth, the foster parents were very strict and conservative, fortunately had good friends early on, I was very musical and liked to go to the school choir, when around 1963 the beat music was on the radio I was enthusiastic and from then on at the age of 9 music was my constant companion, comforter and helper till today, music means everything to me, it has never let me down, it is honest and true ! I've written more than I wanted, but here I feel like I'm understood! this interesting new topic should be continued by you, thanks Phil 😊

  3. Hi Phil, We are on the same "wave-length" when it comes to the therapeutic power of music…I particularly enjoy the "time travel aspects" and how music can evoke memories, feelings etc. …a definite mood enhancer…better than any drug!! Thanks for the background tour and have a fantastic new year !! Cheers

  5. Spot on Phil, as we get older life throws more and more curve balls to test our resilience. Music without a doubt takes our minds off elsewhere and can instill calm, confidence and grounding. However, there are times when a bit of inner contemplation is what's needed whether we think we want it or not. But the need for music always returns if it's always been a part of our lives. Rest assured Phil a Now Spinning video drop is always a bright spot in the day!

  6. Onya Phil! This is what is so special about your presentations- the human frailty included. Thanks for sharing and keeping us old guys in tune. BTW, “Human Frailty” is one of the best Oz band, Hunters and Collectors, albums…see how the mind goes?🤔- Cheers for the New Year.

  7. Hi Phil, music can take you to places both good and bad, I was reminded today of both my parents deaths and the both have music attached, it was some time before I could hear it again and not be overwhelmed, I now hear it and remember the great memories, to this end 'Music is The Healer' is spot on, as you say it can change your feelings from sad or depressed to a more comfortable place, in this respect I believe being a huge music fan is definitely an advantage, I know I often choose albums to play based on my mood at any given moment! Keep up the great work!!

  8. Very well said. Music and pets get me through sad times. Everyone gets down about views and comments, but we shouldn't really care; as someone will always be enjoying what we do. I love your channel, your videos are great! 🙂
