Crime rises under South Africa's rolling blackouts

South Africa is in the middle of an electricity crisis after the country’s power utility ramped up power cuts.

The rolling blackouts have had a devastating effect on the economy and are also raising widespread concerns for public safety.

A record number of assault cases have been reported to the police in the worst year of blackouts the country has experienced.

  1. Oh before I forget, the very apartheid in South Africa which Australia abhored, is alive and well in Australia, Aboriginies in Australia are kept in reservations, I have a friend who does a policing stint in those reservations to make sure the Aboriginies are kept under control.

  2. Just to make it clear, it has notning to do with aging infrastructure.
Main reason, ESKOM is a SOE. The ANC government, their families, their cadres as well as some international companies looted the utility and the tax payers, to line their own pockets.

Refer to Zondo Commision, research the Gupta brothers for the full details on this. Its Billions stolen and the culprits are still roaming free and still running the country. No accountability.
Second reason is incompotance, the only place I know where you shut a generator down for "Maintanance" and you break it more.
I promise its much more comical and entertaining than Joe Biden and his Democrats.

  3. LOL Eskom blames ageing coal power stations. What a joke, The corruption is so bad that is the problem. The anc government have stolen so much that it has taken a functioning country and destroyed it. Just look at all the parastatals, they are all bankrupt, with unqualified people being put into the top seats.

  4. Comming to Australia fast!
This is what 32% of the Australian population voted for.I hope you all have your generators ready & be prepared to grow & gather your own food.
Some sheep will laugh at this comment, but just wait until they start blowing up more power stations & our resource sector starts pulling investment out of Australia then we will see how the 32% plus the Greens survive & thrive?

  5. eskom blaming a aging fleet…………………. have you ever heard of anything more idiotic………………..
Like any business, its that businesses responsibility to maintain and upgrade their equipment.
Just shows you how incompetent the current government is, not eskom, as eskom is a state owned enterprise

  7. Our silver-tongued President was in charge of Eskom when he was deputy president, and promised that load shedding would be a thing of the past in 18 months, in 2014!! They had a wonderful plan of working with the private sector, a 5 point plan – ha!! Our minister of police was fired for being dishonest and unfit for office- Cyril re-hired him, the same person's under investigation for corruption. Our cabinet's a joke, the ruling party's a joke!

  8. cANCer is a slow tedious painful process, now at stage 6.
once a beautiful peaceful country with the strongest currency in the world , albeit with an opressive race law, which was WRONG, i am white , but not white enough to escape rascism either in the old south africa, and even worse hatred & rascism in the NEW south africa also,so no justification for it whatsoever, but as predicted JOHN VORSTER did say that the blacks will F^*k everything up once gaining control,he was absoulutely spot on so now its FUBAR. a monumental cluster£uck has taken place. I left all my " priveleges" and lifes work behind and have found peace in canada, but sorely miss the old lifestyle, but have to think of future generations and cannot have children living in a shithole where they have the wrong color skin to study medicine and are excluded from becoming an owner of mcdonalds, woolworths, diskem, any petrol station, and many other franchisers reserved for blacks only.
    So fu*k them.
They can stick south africa up their AFFIRMITIVE Action arses, i have no pity for them after 28 years, they made their beds, now they must LIE in it.
The previous chief of police did say on national TV that the police cant help you, dont look to them for help, and recently the ceo of escom has said eskom can never be fixed. Its fu"ked .very very sad slow poison…

  9. Haven't these rolling blackouts been happening for years?
They wanted the ANC and now they've got it.
No sympathy here. They wanted a corrupt, incompetent government occupied by unqualified domkops.
South Africa will never recover. It will always slide further and further down the abyss.

  10. Thankfully, Australia has Blackout Bowen as the minister for Climate Change – who knows everything about power generation. Soon we'll be so lucky to have all that renewable energy – some of the time anyway.

  13. It got too much. Installed those light saving bulbs in our house for some light. Have a gas stove for food. Planning to get an inverter now but its pretty expensive if you want to get your entire house on it. But planning to just get it to run the plain things like wifi, charging phones, the TV, and so forth. Also gonna add some solar panels to it so if we do have a full blackout we can at least recharge the inverter batteries to give us electricity. I didn't know that in my life time (at age 30) that I need to worry about having something basic that I pay for every month. You'd expect to use your little bit of savings and salary on other things you need. But we can't live like this. Our power is off every night when we have stage 3+ (like the last 2 months) between 8-12 pm. I get home at 7 so I only have an hour to do things I need to do. And then what do you do… go sleep. Its not just that. When the power is off you can't even use your phone. Cause the signal is 0! So good luck to those who get robbed or need to call someone asap. You won't get through. Don't even talk about how unsafe it gets with everything down. If I wanted to live in the stone age I would take this any day. But we have things to do. We have work to do. We have people to take care of and plan the next days meal. They used the reserves to have Christmas day at least with electricity. But what happens after this… we going back to stage 3. And when the new year kicks in and the factories start again…. back to stage 6. Who knows. Go to stage 8…
