Temper, Temper – Episode 14 – Soviet Campaign – Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts

Greetings, comrades! In the latest episode of our historical series, we proudly embody the might of the Soviet Union as we vanquish the weak and cowardly forces of Japan. But the imperialist American pigs seek to challenge our superiority, even as they wage war against our German comrades. They resort to underhanded tactics, such as sneaking past our defenders and launching torpedoes from a distance. But our heroic sailors will not be deterred. Through sheer skill and determination, we track down and sink a fleet of American cruisers. Join us as we triumph over these capitalist foes and safeguard the glory of the Soviet Union.

  1. In Due Consideration of the Open Letter from Naval โ€œRadicalโ€ Junior Officers to the Labour and Defense Council Regarding the Development and Provisioning of Commerce Raiding Capabilities Based at the Recovered Territories of Russian America

The Editorial Board of Pravda (The Truth) cannot in good conscience ignore the import of the cited Open Letter. While controversial, Pravda urges that the Naval Sub-Committee of the Labour and Defense Council give due consideration to the core arguments of the Open Letter. In this we disagree with the comrades of the Editorial Board of Izvestia (The News) who write that the First Deputy Commander in Chief of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Fleet (the Soviet Navy) should not only disregard the Open Letter but punish the โ€œYoung Turkโ€ officers responsible for it. While some arguments in the Open Letter may have been expressed too boldly, and with less than proper military subordination, they express true Revolutionary Spirit.

Primarily, while it is true that the Red Banner Pacific Fleet out of Vladivostok and the Red Banner Black Sea Fleet out of Sevastopol lead by the Pride of the Soviet Navy, the battleship Sverdlovsk, have been victorious in all its engagements with the Recalcitrant Reactionary Imperialist United States of Americaโ€™s Navy, these engagements have all been between respective fleet combatants. While the Soviet Navy has successfully defended our own merchant ships, we have not struck at the commerce of the American capitalist oppressor forces in their home waters as we have done to the Empires of Japan and Austro-Hungary. We the Pravda Editorial Board cannot express too strongly the importance of successful commerce warfare to bring the Recalcitrant Reactionary Imperialist nations to a state of Communist Revolution.

Therefore we have reached out to senior flag officers of the Soviet Navy to find their opinion of the Open Letter, but no active officers have wished to express their opinions. However retired Comrade Contre Admiral Ivan Ivanovich Vennevski, former Commandant of the Light Combatantsโ€™ Training Command out of Odessa, and who thus has trained a number of the โ€œRadicalโ€ officers penning the Open Letter, has endorsed the Open Letter, with reservations of course, and urged its consideration.

โ€œWhile we should of course respect the experience and opinions of the senior officers of the Soviet Navy, there is no denying that to obtain higher flag rank does require that officers have command experience onboard either Battleships or Battlecruisers. This experience can colour their perspective on the proper capabilities and doctrine of the Soviet Navy. That is, while the claim in the Open Letter that the Admiralty in the Kremlin suffers from a โ€˜Glorious Combatantsโ€™ syndrome is insubordinate, we have to consider honestly if there is sufficient attention given to the development of commerce raiding capability in the structure and doctrine of the Soviet Navy, and of the opportunity that the restoration of Russian America provides to the Soviet Navy to extend those capabilities to the Eastern Pacific Ocean from our new ports of Anchorage and Dutch Harbourโ€ explained Comrade Contre Admiral I.I. Vennevski.

The ports of Anchorage and Dutch Harbour provide anchorages of 24.000 and 32.000 tons respectively, even before improvements. These facilities would be supported by dedicated facilities in the Western Pacific Ocean ports for reserve forces at Korsakov on Sakhalin Island, where the maintenance conditions will be similar to that in Russian America, and home basing sailors from the more salubrious climate at Vladivostok. Light combatants designed with extreme long range capability, high engine efficiency to provide good cruising speed, armourment designed to quickly dispatch capitalist oppressorsโ€™ merchant ships, and good torpedo capacity to disperse or destroy enemy escorts while our ships race around to attack the enemy convoys. Operating as rotating squadrons from their forward bases which should double the capacity of the ports, ships built around an 8.000 ton displacement should give each squadron a five ship capacity. Posted outside of the major commercial ports of Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco of the American West Coast, they can provide a constant threat to the commerce operating in the Pacific. Commerce raiding operations in the Atlantic of course should be the responsibility of our allies from their facilities in the Caribbean and further east. For the Soviet Navy operations in the Eastern Pacific, reserve ships should be built as well, and badly damaged ships scrapped to clear the Eastern Pacific Ports to allow these reserves to be brought forward while not expensively burdening the facilities there.

While we do not agree with the writers of the Open Letter on their claim that the Naval Affairs sub-committee and Soviet Navy Admiralty suffer from Hullism, the myopic practice of demanding a new hull form become available before creating new Project specifications for a new class, we believe it is important to consider and release a new specification based on current hull designs for a light combatant with good battle and cruising speeds, long range, and capability to bring commerce raiding to the Eastern Pacific in furtherance of our defeat of the Recalcitrant Reactionary Imperialist forces.

(Hi Brother Munro. I understand that this comment may actually appear after you have completed the whole campaign, but I enjoyed the research and writing of the editorial.)

  2. Peace with the Empire of Japan

The Glorious Soviet Navy, with the lead of the Red Banner Pacific Fleet, has beaten the forces of the Recalcitrant Reactionary Imperialist Empire of Japan.

  4. I see you tend to build up large surpluses of cash in campaigns, which is great. In your opinion, is that pretty much just "rainy day" funds or what do you think is the best way to use large surpluses like you have in this campaign? Also, your destroyers seem very frajilay in this campaign. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Successful Convoy Protection

The (as yet unnamed), lead ship of the Project 32309 class, leading three destroyers, successfully sank two Recalcitrant Reactionary Imperialist U.S. Navy Light Cruisers, the USS Tucson and USS Portsmouth, protecting 16 merchant ships, 157.680 tons of our vital shipping capacity.

  6. Expensive Victory in Support of Rome

The Red Banner Black Sea Fleet led by the Pride of the Soviet Navy, the battleship Sverdlovsk, supporting our Italian allies, found and sank a heavy cruiser task force of the recalcitrant reactionary imperialist America Navy. Ably supported by the light cruiser Abrek and heavy cruiser V. Monomakh, our task force sank the USS Cambridge, USS Worcester, USS Oregon, USS Washington, USS North Carolina and several smaller ships for the loss of only the Lietenant Sergeev.

Now the Navy needs only to develop the capacity to bring this war to the home waters of our enemy.

  7. I don't think the game models line of sight very well.

There is a resort many battleships went for very tall towers with rangefinders at the top.

You see the higher up you are the further you can see. So unless you were fighting in a fog bank, battleships could and would detect ships at longer ranges than light cruisers or armoured Cruisers, however destroyers were quite small and could hide among the waves effectively.

  8. Torps need a clear line of fire and be rotated toward the intercept point, not the current location of the ship. It's a problem with torps not lining up shots while turned off in preparation to fire mostly. The window on when and how to use torps isn't very clear and could use work. Taking hints from other ship games like world of warships could help with this. Give a line of interception and line of fire to know better when torps will fire based on when they line up, the different torp settings determines how large these fire arcs are.

  9. As you have said before, you can design and build ships while useful research for that ship is happening. Obviously harder for weight-saving tech like Armour Quality.
Why not design and build your desired 16"/410mm-equipped ship now, with displeasing Mk 2 16" (and spare displacement) and then upgrade immediately after construction (or as soon as Mk 3 16" is researched)?

  10. The more I play this thing, the more I realize Stealth is right…
The game just moved an entire battlegroup to Hegoland by itself, created two ships of the same class with the same name, and top it all off, I lost an Iowa due it just stopping on the Spanish Coast after its battlegroup was attacked. The rest of the group continued on to reblockade the Austro-Hungarians, but for some reason the Iowa stayed off the coast of Spain all by herself…
    Game is Dog Water ATM.
