Cross, I have a lot of respect for you as a content creator, and I appreciate what you say at the end of your video. But I also want to talk about it a bit, because I know you’re a thoughtful enough dude to grasp the nuance.
First, in your video on Bungie’s GDC talk, you said it’s really important to have context for discussing complex issues, and I think that knowing the context here is important, so I might suggest looking into the things JK Rowling has done/said a bit more deeply so you have the context.
Second, here’s the thing – two things can be true at the same time:
1. You’re 100% allowed to cover and enjoy anything you’d like, including a game based on Harry Potter. I too have historically been a huge fan of this world, game looks dope, and the developers are absolutely passionate about it. All of that is true and legitimate.
2. The transphobic campaign JK Rowling has been waging for years using her massive platform is exceptionally harmful to a particularly vulnerable group of people, and so talking about this game and supporting it publicly might be hurtful to a segment of your viewership. That is true and legitimate too.
In other words, we can acknowledge what makes this game exciting AND ALSO acknowledge that the scope of this author’s bizarre and years-long vendetta against trans people is exceptionally harmful. And, covering and enjoying the game is fine if that’s what you’d like to do AND ALSO it might have consequences.
It’s not a comfortable situation, I know. And I appreciate that you say that people are free to not play the game, and don’t call them out for making that decision. But I’d have even more respect if you just owned your decision and didn’t try to say that your covering the game should be separate from the other conversation, or trying to minimize the real harm JK Rowling is doing by calling it “stupid things on the internet” and then appealing to the passion of the developers. It’s JK Rowling who is hurting the developers by being such a bigoted, toxic person that some players don’t want to engage with the game, not the people who are calling her out – that’s the real shame here, to my mind. I think you can just make your decision and own it without trying to stay in the dark about what she’s saying, or say that the passion of the developers somehow makes up for it; and you can totally still make videos while also acknowledging the effect they may have – if only for the (likely small, but still real) segment of your viewership who is trans. I think that would just be a bit more honest, and you’ve always struck me as an honest dude who can handle keeping multiple ideas like this in mind simultaneously.
Just my two cents. Again, I’ve always dug your content, and look forward to your videos on this game as well. Keep up the good work, bud.
