Sweep Picking has a certain sound and I think most of us who spent time on it learned quite similar arpeggio based stuff which doesn’t actually tend to sound either very melodic, or can sound quite predictable. This little thing I stumbled on last night is a bit more like what a piano player might play and sounds pretty nice I think?

Again, another reminder of why you are one of my absolute fav guitarists around.
Sweeping is great in the context of economy picking absolutely terrible in the context of just ripping through the same transposed arpeggio voicing (at least from a pedagogical point of view, so many people learning it seem to get trapped in that one mode of use).
Lol, my playing is such a poor imitation of yours! But I try!!
Nice
(Not meaning to sound like Harry on GH's page!) Doing little cyclical 2 1 2 sweeps of pentatonic in major third's tuning gives some incredibly fast and melodic Eric Johnson-ish stuff!
Here's a thing that I've been trying recently: tuning in major 3rds with the G and B the same flatten the top E then repeat all of that an octave lower for the bottom three strings so a low G etc. It's been a revelation! I might even try and stick with it, chords are mega simple! 😃
Frank Gambale is the be all and end all of sweep picking, it was always about lines as much as arpeggios, it's just that a lot of metal players don't utilise the full potential.
Mornin!!
Love that green
Honestly, my favorite videos (other than just listening to you play or improv) is your lesson videos.
Love the lessons. Keep em coming.
I have a feeling that “whoops” moment near the end is going to make it into one of your intros… sounded very JNC to me 😊
Great vid, as usual! I realized that one of the reasons why I think your vids are so useful is because you actually do a lot of major stuff as opposed to minor blues and rock. Really appreciate that. On that note, I would love to see a lesson on how you approach runs in general.
Good grief. That cheeky little pinched harmonic at 01.15 was bloody glorious!
A couple of things that also helped me with Sweep Picking is avoid any more than 2 notes ringing at the same time. I do that by sort of rolling off the fretting fingers in sequence. Using the picking hand middle finger for the highest note when skipping over a string can make Sweeping more versatile and give access to other unusual, unexpected, voicings and patterns. Thanks
My new favorite guitarist on YT. (Sorry RJ Ronquillo)
Hi there is this on your patreon site? Cant find it
If this guy did a paid course just for this 70s/80s vibe ballad stuff he keeps doing, we would throw money at it.
Great video!! and great tone too!!! you use helix stomp? cheers
Solid teaching, man. I enjoyed that one
The melodic line here reminds me of a song called you enjoy myself. Treys use of a similar sweep picking melody is an excellent example of this technique in action. Or animals as leader, Tosin employees 4 note arpeggios so fluently
Great lesson! Thanks John!
Fender player vs. Silver sky SE? (Same price here) I've had the SS-se on pre-order for months and they just pushed it out another two months.
Gosh, that SilverSky sounds amazing. Great playing !
I keep hearing Julee Cruise.
Good lesson/discussion… what patch is this?
Killer tone! Can you please share the chain?🙏🙏
