My dad really liked this movie. He rented it a couple of years after it came out, and even though I was only 9, I loved it. There's just something about "buddy cop" films which are always fun. Such an entertaining movie!
Sorta shocked that nobody realized that DeNiro (Jack Walsh) bounty is "The Dukes'" Charles Grodin. The dad from "Beethoven" (1992)
I can't believe you don't like the Duke. One of the funniest characters ever!!
R.I.P. Charles Grodin.
Itโs funny, the U.S. stopped printing $1000.00 bills in 1946 and recalled all the remaining in circulation in 1969. I wasnโt even sure they had really existed.( lol)
Thousand dollar bills do/did exist, they just aren't in normal circulation. Larger notes were printed for transactions between banks, but not usually seen by the public. Hundreds are the largest bills in general circulation.
yup 1000$ were real and was taken off production, so criminals couldnt use them anymore for their stuff, because 1000$ dont use much space, compared to 100$
Great movie!!!!
Hey guys, I'm sure it was suggested hundred of times, but if you didn't watch it, you should react to "The Good Place" – Nice to see a reaction to this movie, I search for a reaction on Youtube last week, so nice to see that you guys are watching it.
I always think of "Dave" and "Beethoven" when thinking of Charles Grodin.
Denis Farina started as a real policeman befor moving into acting
Someone finally reacted to this forgotten gem! Thanks!
Lethal Weapon. 48 Hours. No. This is the underdog of 80's buddy movies. I saw this at the age twelve and loved and still do. So underrated, but i love that you covered this GEM to bring it to a wider audience. Lots of love…
As someone who grew up in the 80's, it's weird to see which movies stuck in pop culture and which ones didn't. This movie was huge in my high school, everyone quoted it ("I've come too f*n far", "see you in the next life," "Serrano's got the disks! Serrano's got the disks!") but then somehow it disappeared off the face of the earth while other movies stayed famous, and I don't know why. Glad to see that you guys liked it and hopefully will re-introduce it to a whole new audience!
If you're interested in other movies with Charles Grodin, a couple come to mind… "Seems like old times" (1980) with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, also "Taking Care of Business" (1990) with Jim Belushi ๐
Have you considered "Big Trouble" (2002)? with Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci and other familiar faces, it came to mind because of Dennis Farina (Serrano) who plays a secondary character, a hitman after Stanley Tucci.
๐
Another different kind of role for DeNiro is a movie called Awakenings with Robin Williams. Charles Grodin has been in several comedies over the years, Seems Like old Times, Heaven can wait, Beethoven just to name a few
Fun facts, Dennis Farina who played Jimmy Serrano was a Chicago cop before he became an actor. The airline ticket clerk in Las Vegas is played by the director Martin Brest. Also thousand dollar bills were discontinued by President Richard Nixon when he began the War On Drugs as a way make it harder for drug dealers to move their. Please react to Clifford (1994).
Great movie you should watch great other Gordin movies like Taking Care Of Bussniess, The Lonely Guy, Heaven Can Wait. I would also recommend De Nero in Awakenings with Robin Williams
Great pick one of my favs growing up
OH WOWWWWWWW, I MISSED THIS, DAMNNNN! ๐ THIS WAS SUCH A GREAT FILM YOU GUYS, VERYYYYY COOL! ๐
I used 4, 1,000-dollar bills to buy my first car.
PLANES, TRAINS DID DAN! ๐ 87, THIS WAS 88 BUT ALSO THIS WAS JUST DIFFERENT FROM PLANES, TRAINS JUST WITH DENIRO ALONE! ๐ SO THIS WAS DIRECTED BY ( MARTIN BREST ) WHO DID THE 84 CLASSIC EDDIE MURPHY COMEDY ( BEVERLY HILLS COP ) ๐ ANYWAY, VERY NIIICCEEE! DAN AND SAM, HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON TO YOU GUYS, MANYYYY BLESSINGS TO YOU!
MARVIN IS IN THE ( BEVERLY HILLS COP ) SERIES TOO YOU GUYS, FUNNY CLASSIC FILMS! ๐
OTHER GREAT DENIRO FILMS, : UNTOUCHABLES, CAPE FEAR, OF COURSE THE TRIQUEL OF FILMS OF ( MEET THE PARENTS )
Hells yeah guys, this is a big time favorite. This is definitely a they donโt make them like this anymore. Love this movie.
I love this movie and I'm so glad you both finally watched it. For what it's worth, I really liked the Duke. I can see how he'd drive you crazy, but he really did convenience Robert DeNiro that he was an OK guy by the end. And yes, those $1000.00 bills were real.
One of the best odd couple pairings in a movie ever.
If you get a chance, watch Grodin on the Johnny Carson Show. He was on the show many times and he kind of played a mean character on the show and it was all great interactions. Grodin is always funny.
My favourite 'Odd Couple' movie, thanks for watching.
TBR check out Silver Streak, a similar drama comedy with Gene Wilder
Love that movie.
9:07 Cops have morals? Since when?
THESE THINGS GO DOWN
IT'S TOO BIG
This movie stands up to multiple re-watches, and if you do, which I hope, you will see that the Duke is extremely smart, very observant as far as character, and is being annoying to Jack on purpose. Remember that his objective from second 1 is to get away from Jack and to safety before he's killed by Serrano. He is deliberately wearing Jack down, wearing us down, and getting to know Jack's character and weaknesses. Remember too that he is not a criminal. As he explains in Amarillo, he thought he was working for a legit company and, when he found out he wasn't, he did something about it – Jack admits he was on the Duke's side until his own objective came into the picture.
Once you know this, you can watch the strategies by which the Duke operates on Jack, and how, what ends up happening is that very reluctant mutual appreciation. And you'll see the Duke's own desperation build and his character become less needling and more direct after the train confession from Jack: there's a new dynamic between them now; also they're getting closer to LA, the Duke is running out of time and strategies. He can't afford the psychological games he's been playing anymore. And, clearly, after "I hope it's a nice coffee shop, Jack", Jack's wheels are seriously beginning to turn.
The writing and the casting for this movie is terrific. On first watch, my sister and brother both appreciated the helicopter shooting and told me it was one of the smartest arial killings they'd ever seen in a movie. Things call back wonderfully, too: that last bit at the airport where Marvin's back is to the gunmen, and Jack is desperately telling him to look out is payback for the many times Jack did that to Marvin before, and finished with a punch to Marvin. It's a boy who cried wolf situation. There are other little character gems, too.
The phone buttons, by the way, did sound different when pressed. Jack made the call to the Duke's friend specifically to get that phone number, in order to get the address in NYC for the Duke. The Duke knew immediately that something was wrong and that's why he orders Helen to get off the phone at once. He and his wife are in the middle of prepping his escape when Jack breaks into their home.
Fun review; great film!
Adam sandler remade this movie
We're No Angels another great De Niro comedy and he doesn't talk in it. His acting is all done through his expressions. Brilliant
Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines is on par either this money. Great underrated action/comedy.
The best funny Robert DeNiro film is The King of Comedy. The best Charles Grodin film is Elaine May's The Heartbreak Kid (1972).
Guys would you please add the Richard Gere classic 'An Officer & a gentleman' to one of your polls. It's an amazing film with an iconic ending.
Rest in peace, Grodin. You were a good man.
RIP Charles Grodin and RIP my dad who loved Grodin in this.
Candy irritated Martin in Planes, Trains… the same way Grodin irritated DeNiro in this.
Grodin kept talking to get in DeNiro`s head and it worked.
Serranoโs got the discs!!
