There are more than double the number of private security officers than police officers and national military combined in South Africa. This can be helpful to communities who feel underserved by their own countries. But like with any privatization efforts, there are major drawbacks. VICE News looks at the impact in Durban, the starting point of the unrest in SA in 2021.

Once again, vice blaming everything on race and racism. Very lazy journalism. They don't even try to understand what is going on, they just claim racism. If 99.9% of people looting are black then of course more blacks are going to get shot by security forces.
RSA is fucked and you know what is good i dont care
this is so far from the truth I was there and the reason that the vast majority is becuse most of the people at the riots were black becuse of poverty!!
Typical Media and promoting bullshit South Africa is much more than this divisive episode👎
9:12 the "wrong people's" hands eh. which people exactly are wrong? wrong for continuing existing while Black? wrong for being victimized? There is a population dearth in eurasia, plenty of room for returnees ijs.
All of you leave South Africa go back to the Caucasus Mountains leave the melanated people alone,,,, you're robbing them of their resources showing your constant racism tactics
If I was the president of South Africa , seriously , if you were not black I would force you to leave the continent, and I wouldn't give a damn if you were rich or poor your ass is leaving
So we are living with it … The reality of a South African
2.5 million private security 😳😳😳😳…..I'm sure here in the USA we are not far behind
It's Zulu people not South Africans, and this uprising occured when the former president was charged with contempt of court after failing to show up for court. Only two states participated in this, that's Gauteng and KZN. The rest of us we sat by while the international media reported we are all responsible for this. Zulu people don't use brains, we are all poor but are malls are still in perfect shape, and they act like they are fighting for us but in reality it's arrogance, poverty, lack of intelligence and their history with war.
Black africans being racial profiling in South Africa by Indians. What a crazy world
Shame what’s happened to South Africa.
Everyone knows who the violent criminals are in SA…just like the rest of the world.
There’s a reason that certain races aren’t invited to play in the sandbox with the other kids…it’s a bummer, but it’s true. You act like a jackass, the public sees it…and remembers. They steer clear of any race or culture after having problems a few times with them. It’s embarrassing that people claim they want to try to “understand why some people are viewed as trouble”…when it’s obvious. 😂
The best is taking out private armed response with "Guard Me" with FNB
For R50,00pm that's like 3 American dollars for anyone out of SA
For those 3 bucks wherever u are in SA the nearest affiliated armed response officer will come to you its excellent
Ah yes south Africa, a once first world country were one rand was the same as two dollars. Now a corrupt hell hole wear being a farmer is a death sentence and criminals run loose
Indians are some of the most productive people in SA. A real asset to SA, and their homes were attacked unprovoked, way before any blockades were put up, and the police ran out of bullets, so the police could not protect anybody. I recall how the Zulus reportedly went to their witch doctors for muti (medicine) to protect them against bullets, but when the muti failed to work, they teary-eyed claim they were "brutalized". Really? They executed a premeditated attack on the people they're now accusing of brutalizing them. WTF!?! And this reporter laps up their BS because it fits the narrative she's trying to promote.
In south Africa the security guards are like cops, and the police are like security guards.
That's a shockingly bad representation of a biased sided documentary. Vice news is supposed to report not take sides.
The journalist woman is a disgrace trying to put words in people's mouths.
It makes me mad seeing people racially profiling Africans in Africa. How dare them
Yo Vice stop trying to make people say things you wan't said because it's propaganda not journalism.
Rainbow Nation stay strong !
This is a bullshit video. Everything is Africa is “racially” motivated and always will be with information like this being released
Why are you trying to make it about race VICE? South Africa is corrupt and are trying to put the blame on race to get them out of the heat…
Everything has to be about race🙄
The dude at 5:37 is more intelligent than Governor Newsom..
Dear proganda machine we call Vice. Why do more research before making it a racial thing?
Cut off the hand of the thief the first time I think he will not steal again because it will cut off his other hand.
What a shock that the majority of deaths were black people in a majority black populace.
Yeah cops out here are pretty trash
wez thrivin in south africa and shiet
As a South African- the reporter is massively race baiting. She looks for a racial angle at every turn. Police and security were overwhelmed- there was no time in which to come up with racial strategy. It’s survival and that isn’t even factored into any of this “journalism”
If you’re going to do a story like this, you should really tell the whole story. I live in a Durban. I was here. This is not the whole story.
Ha ha yah first places looted:bottlestores! Thanks another night with candles!
Which is dangerous ? Afghanistan or Africa ? I say they are the same . Am also a security guard and body guard , ex special forces are workin here for 200 $ per month
I live through the riots in a neighbourhood in the middle of it. It was horrific and terrifying. I STILL feel traumatised from the experience. This does not correctly explain the situation as it happened on the ground. I had white, black and Indian neighbours and we all stood side by side to protect our neighbourhoods and the threat was REAL. There were no police – they were out on the frontlines dealing with the hoards who were stealing and destroying businesses, shopping malls and even police arms supplies. There was no army because the president decided that it was not politically in his favour to action support from the army until it was all basically over. We were abandoned by government and just left to fend for ourselves. It felt very very close to civil war. This was not racially motivated – that’s far too simplistic.
“The media are less a window on reality, than a stage on which officials and journalists perform self-scripted, self-serving fictions.”
― Thomas Sowell, The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy
😂 what a joke this entire video is about rasism and nothing about private security or anything in that area … nee Fok bra julle kom naai rond met kak wat niks sin maak nie. gaan praat kak saam jou MA sy wil kinders tel
I was in KZN during the unrest. the racial profiling was on another level. people had to have proof of addresses, people's cars were stopped and searched.
5:05 They was wit da shits 😳 HOLLY "DJ AKADEMIKS voice" 😂
Corporate armies is what happens when government police become too corrupt
