The Canadian Government first established them in the 1870's, but similar charter schools have been established as early as the 1830's under the colonial government in upper canada

If survivors are still alive, doesn’t that mean that the people responsible for this could be too? Zero investigations into this. We all pretend this is ancient history. Last school closed in 96. It’s not.
Depending on areas in which you live. The atrocities of the residential schools are still not fully taught within the Canadian schools. I grew up in a small town in Alberta and all we got was a crash course of it “saying it was bad”. It took me moving to Manitoba and working on a reserve to fully understand what the indigenous Canadians went through.
The Chief of this reserve in Manitoba was telling me his story, how he was ripped away from his family and forced into a school. In this school the priest would actively grope and SA the female students in class. He was a 60 year old man in tears and struggled through the whole story, I will never forget that conversation and that man for as long as I live. And for the first time I understood and felt disgusted calling myself a Canadian.
Our government still continues to mistreat the indigenous people here and actively pass the blame on the pope or other people. I think all of us as Canadians should be sorry and ashamed for what we have done.

we dont even know the full truth, and there is no way to reconcile these horrific atrocities. canada needs to be focusing on uncovering the full extent of its depravity, naming and knowing that truth, owning it as a foundation to the colonial institution of ‘Canada’, and most importantly move forward with Indigenous communties to improve the damage they’ve created. Stolen land that has been ecologically decemated for resources. There are Rez’s on boil water advisory. STILL. old growth logging on disputed territory. ARRESTS of peaceful protestors. THOUSANDS of women, girls, and two spirit folks that have been murdered by white men. every canadian knows the highway of tears. it is essential to know the history of residential schools but we need to keep talking about what the government refuses to acknowledge and change in any meaningful way. there is no reconciliation when the canadian government is still allowing Indigenous people to be treated as second class citizens. the racism here is real and violent. dont kid yourself. canada is just better at hiding it, or willfully ignoring it. listen to Indigenous people. really listen. 🧡

There is an amazing, haunting book called "27th deaths of Toby Obed" – it's series of interviews with Indigenous survivers and First Nations representatives. It's full of real people's stories, facts and history behind that genocide. I strongly recommend to read it, it's heavy lecture but insanely important, giving back voice to those who were silenced

The same thing here was done in the States to indigenous people. There is at least one school and graveyard they have found. They returned all remains they could find family to return to. That hasn’t been but a year ago that made the news.

Lived next to the site of the lejac BC residential school it was shut down in between 1976-1978 my grandma was 16. She had my mom the same year. They tore it down in the 90s I think it’s gone now

Oh, I had just commented about this a few weeks ago on a different video. Good job Simon and team. They didn't teach anything about theses schools when i was in high school (I heard of them later though) anyway you probably enlightened some people more in the 12.5 minutes of this video than the education system did. Also it's crazy that these schools were still operating in the 90s, I mean, I graduated in 98…crazy.
This was the norm across the whole boarding school system. Why is this framed as a indigenous issue?

We should be rounding up anyone still alive who had any part in these schools (from cooks, to teachers to admin staff) and they should be charged with life in prison and huge monetary fines. The last school closed in 1996, if survivors are still alive, so are the perpetrators. Germany is still rounding up and punishing Nazis, why can't Canada do the same to these scumbags.
I’m a American and those types of schools were also here. The treatment of indigenous and African people by Europeans historically has been sickening. It’s sickens me even more that they used the excuse of Christianity.
