Las Vegas Raiders 17th overall draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft was released by the Raiders on 8/30/2022. The Alabama tackle was drafted by the old Raiders regime of Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock. In Las Vegas Raiders News, by waiving the right tackle, the Raiders will take a $7.9 million hit to their salary cap if no other team claims him. Per Over The Cap, Leatherwood’s $14.39 million salary was fully guaranteed. So the Raiders are willing to take a massive salary cap hit to NOT have him on the Raiders roster.

Alex Leatherwood has a chance to develop into a decent player but it will take 2-4 years from him to reach that potential (if he reaches that potential)
The biggest draft bust for the Raiders in my opinion would be Jamarcus ‘Jabba the Hutt’ Russel.
Leatherwood was definitely a bust for the Raiders, but not the biggest bust ever.

Tennessee had a 1st round pick released in 2nd year last year. The leather wood pick was bad. No excuses and respect for the gm for no caring about cap hits and wants the best players now. Go raiders. Everyone needs to realize that 1st rounders sometimes don't work out. Look around the league and check 1st round picks. You will be surprised.

Sorry guys but Jamarcus Russell has him beat by about 30 million dollars and had no potential to ever develop. At least this young O-lineman can possibly develop. Leatherwood seemed to not want to be here, that is what I saw. If he gets to the right situation he can still do something in the NFL. J. Russell was a complete and utter shit show from day one.
RJ, I think you are wrong in your way of pointing any blame at the new regime. Their plan most definitely was wanting him to succeed. They gave him every chance to and he failed. The team made the smart move in moving on from him, that’s not on the new regime, wasn’t their guy. Plus, the Bears picked claimed him off waivers, they are now responsible for his contract or a big portion of it which is my understanding, the regime actually made the right move.
Leatherwood would have been a serious danger to our quarterback just by being on the field.
Leatherwood is definitely not the biggest bust Josh Rosen got picked #10 by the Cardinals and traded to Miami the next year. I think the pick has to be top 10 to be biggest bust. Now when Trey Lance gets benched for Jimmy G. by the 5th game this year that will be a bigger bust.

A bust is someone who was drafted at or near where they were projected and they didn't produce (Jamarcus Russell). Not Leatherwood's fault he was drafted way too early. Plus Leatherwood still has a chance to be a serviceable lineman at some point.
Jamarcus Russell is a way bigger bust. Not even close. JM was a projected #1 overall pick who went #1 and bombed huge. Leatherwood was a projected 2nd – 3rd rounder who the Raiders reached on.

It happened because we have smart coaches and they got us out of a bad situation with a player that still needs work. Teams usually keep these players for at least three years to try and develop them but if it doesnt work out they eat a lot of money. Our coaches dont have faith in his development so they got us out of a bad situation where we woulda been stuck paying a lot of money for a mediocre player.
