Putin's craving for power | DW Documentary

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an all-out attack on Ukraine. While Putin spuriously claimed that the country must be “denazified,” the attack is in fact part of the Russian leader’s attempt to return to the days of Russian empire.

From the very beginning of his tenure, the Russian president’s foreign policy strategy aimed to destabilize Russia’s neighboring states. The Chechen war raged from 1999 to 2009. In 2008, Putin attacked Georgia. This was followed, in 2014, by the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. Putin’s goal was always to bring these neighbors back into the Russian sphere of influence, and to prevent the emergence of democratic societies there.

Putin also wanted to prevent neighboring countries from drawing closer to the EU or NATO. But his desire to exert military power over foreign states was not limited to Europe: Putin also came to the defense of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, and used Russian-controlled mercenary troops to intervene in Libya, the Central African Republic and Venezuela.

Within Russia, he has managed to consolidate his power thanks to drastic coercive measures and state-controlled propaganda. In this documentary, Russian journalists, human rights activists and even oligarchs have their say. They paint a picture of a man whose quest for power knows no bounds.

  1. NATO promised Russia they won't expand east as did USA but west is cheat and liars they broke the agreement and started process to make Ukraine a NATO member as well as Georgia Russia said they don't want any expansion in black sea as they will be surrounded by the enemy. NATO and USA are the one to be blamed for war in Ukraine.

  3. These people talking including DW are the same ones that have coddled and appeased Putin over the past 20 years doing news pieces like this making him look like some kind of legitimate civilized world leader when he's nothing more than a thug and a war criminal the worst of the worst I might add, and the thought that the employees of DW and any of these people talking would allow their children to be around this monster if that he's so desired I'm sure he that they would. Well your body out now he's not so much a superhero aren't you that the big superpower Russia is on his knees begging I ran for its moped drones where is all this high-tech and military equipment you spoke of in this video now? And you still are on your knees to this monster like your mesmerized by him or something is pathetic to watch like the whole thing about the Russian symphony who cares nobody in the West watched it talking about it was showing all over the world we in the US would take a huge dump all the Russian symphony orchestra who cares??!!

  5. Documentary with facts like neo nazi uprising in Ukraine after world war 2 (to which the US govt. agreed but later chose to give arms and training to the nazis), and utter disregard for the Minsk agreement by Ukraine are conveniently left out. DW looked better compared to BBC and US propaganda outlets for a while. In the end, They're all the same. When the new narrative emerges which will happen for sure, watch out these news outlets complain day in day out 😅

  6. After 22 years of Putin, the Russian economy can't do anything except extract natural resources. They don't design or make anything people want to buy. No one will stick their neck out to innovate in the private sector since the only ways to succeed are by playing ball with the kleptocracy or becoming a part of it.

  7. To be fair, it doesn't seem to me at all that Putin thinks of himself as some kind of Tzar. He doesn't seem to have any delusions of grandeur and his attitude is very down to earth. The leaders of the West have been pretty much understated about the conflict in Ukraine also, but what do they think about the public discourse among the people of their countries? It doesn't appear that Russian citizens have the flights of fantasy about the West and NATO, as their counterparts have.

  9. Western countries like Germany and France made a big mistake thinking that russia and putin can be civilized.Eastern countries like Poland ,Baltic States have been warning for many years that you can`t trust putin, you can`t build Nord Streams and so on.Nobody wanted to take it seriously.Russia propaganda showed it as russofobia. To make things worse the US presidents like Obama ,Trump were weak and were manipulated by russian propaganda.Eastern Europe realizes that so called "russkij mir"(russian world) means poverty, terror, massive graves, massive killings people. And now we can see it in Ukraine. It was long way for the West to understand that Eastern Europe was right.putin never wanted to cooperate with the West.he actually hates the West from the beginning but the West was blind and naive.Such people like previous Chancelor Shroder were only tools in Putin`s hands.Mrs.Merkel and french presidents were naive. And of course money was the strong motivation for Europe`s elites. Now we don`t know what the result of it will be,what the result of war will be,and there is a great danger of total armageddon on the table. All in all this situation is a result of big mistakes which the West made in last 20 years according to putin.
