The Blood Angels are one of the 20 First Founding Legions of the Space Marines and were originally the IXth Legion before the Second Founding broke the Legiones Astartes up into separate Chapters of 1,000 Space Marines each.

They are feared for the curse of flawed gene-seed they carry. The Blood Angels are amongst the longest-living of the Adeptus Astartes, with some of the Chapter’s Space Marines having served the Emperor of Mankind for over a thousand standard years.

The Blood Angels are the noble descendants of that most puissant and angelic of the primarchs — Sanguinius. They are perhaps one of the most celebrated Chapters in the entire Imperium, their countless heroic deeds and victories known to untold billions of the Emperor’s subjects across the length and breadth of the galaxy.

  1. The reason the Blood Angels succumbing to the Red Thirst are locked away and the Ones succumbing to Black Rage are sent to fight, is that the Black Rage still allows a Blood Angel to tell friend from foe, seeing all enemies as Horus and all allies as either the Emperor himself or another marine still. The Red Thirst is so all consuming that the marine will fight, kill, and eat anybody they see, regardless of allegiance.

  2. You guys got a lot of this wrong.. the red thirst is their vampirism, they thirst for blood and live longer than any other legion. That’s their flaw. The black rage is what gets them tossed in the tower, there is no coming back from the black rage with the exception of mephiston and a handful of others who recovered from the black rage. The red thirst however is more like a frenzy. The second company has a tradition of actually drinking the blood of their enemies still, “the blooded” ironically their ability of controlling the red thirst through engaging in drinking blood makes them less likely to frenzy. Dante is haggard AF because he doesn’t drink blood. Only did it for the first time in devastation of Baal.

  3. Love listening to these and playing Vampire Survivors, Risk of Rain 2 or any other rogue-like/ rogue-lite game in the background (or farm in an MMO). Also, Ave Dominus Nox – more NL content pls! 🙂

  4. So it may not still be the case, but in old codexes, the Black Rage and the Red Thirst had a link – in that the Black Rage, by sending the Angels insane, also eventually shatters any ability to control the Red Thirst. They basically start off too angry to go full red thirst, but it's building more and more in the background (and because how BR works, they can still function, albiet as suicide shock troops) until eventually they're in complete red thirst mode.

Fully falling to the red thirst renders Angels virtually animalistic in their need for blood – instead of crazy berserkers who are still marines underneath it all, it'd be like trying to herd cats. Vampiric space marine cats, who may turn on their allies as often as the enemy. That's why the Death Company is a thing – give them the "honourable" way out before they turn into beasts.

  5. I know its nitpicky, but Mephiston is the strongest psyker in the imperium bare the emperor and maybe Draigo.
I say maybe draigo, because both have fought the same daemon at some point in their life and both defeated the daemon. the thing is that Mephiston had a significantly easier time fighting the daemon than Draigo, but then there is also the difference that Mephiston fought the daemon out of the warp and draigo fought him in the warp.

either way ignoring big E Mephiston and Draigo are both more or less the strongest psykers in the imperium, and then you have the likes of tigerius behind them

  6. 25:47 The way I'd envision it is that the Red Thirst (like you guys described earlier) is more like a slow and gradually-building dementia, one that can be slowed down but is always waiting at the end of the road, so even those locked away in the Tower of the Lost aren't completely damned yet; whereas the Black Rage is more of a sudden and unpredictable schizophrenic "snap", one that can trigger at any time and is the final straw that will doom a Blood Angel to one of two treatments: either a glorious death on the battlefield in the Death Company, or execution by Astorath the Grim.

36:35 Considering that they have Sanguinius' gene-seed to grow all the Astartes organs, I'd imagine that it's at least theoretically possible to artificially grow the necessary blood cells with his DNA; granted, it wouldn't be as much as if they still had him alive with his own bone marrow, but surely it'd still be at least enough to make that IV drip for all the neophytes they end up with after the initial trials.

"The Primarch's blood, preserved within the bodies of the Chapter's Sanguinary Priests, is used as a necessary catalyst to activate the recently implanted gene-seed organs"

  9. A delineation about their two ailments:
Red Thirst is this basic idea of space-savage-vampire thing-that-goes-bump-in-the-night "I'm a monster by nature, I fight it but can't hold out forever all the time. Sometimes I gotta… 'indulge.'"

Black Rage is the idea of the above space-vampire got meaning and redemption for a while from a de-facto angel who's also his best-dad-ever, and basically-Satan killed him and took that light away from that vampire's life. Now his entire existence just got thrown into the abyss. He's witnessing the single-most devastating event conceivable to him, so he's thrown into full-on max-throttle perma-rage.

Both flavors of violence capture the two main vampire combat aesthetics – the general baseline 'monster' nature, and that epic final-stand state where the monster's true 'everything' is brought to bear.

  10. Bricky, difference:
-Red Thirst: we iz vampyres. Gotta keep them craves in check!!
-Black Rage: Dad's been jumped! Revenge!
But then again, probably two writers came with two expressions for the same thing and GW got too lazy to even try retcon it.

  11. You guys should put your Podcasts on Spotify. I love listening to your podcasts while driving and is much more focused and enjoyable than Lorehammer, however, YouTube is not a good platform for listening to podcasts while driving as you need premium to play YouTube in the background and also GPS treats YouTube as music, where the volume gets turned down but continues while giving instructions, meaning that I often have to skip back 15 seconds to try to listen to what the GPS spoke over. This is tolerable on highways where there are long stretches of driving on one road but is difficult to do when driving outside of the highway where the GPS gives frequent instructions and I may not be familiar with the place I am driving through. If Adeptus Ridiculous could go on Spotify, it would solve all of these problems so that I can keep the GPS up on the screen and the podcast gets paused whenever the GPS gives instructions so I don’t have to rewind.

  13. So I discovered the Podcast about a month ago and have since watched every episode whilst studying. Thank you so much Ad Ric for getting me on the 40K train. I recently went to my local tabletop store and picked up the basics, they sold me a generic Space Marine for cheap so I can practice painting him, I love him very much. His name is John Astartes and I shall paint him as a Space Wolf, "Woof! Woof! Woof!", this is likely the beginning of my addiction to plastic crack, so whilst I thank you. My wallet will not, but I'm sure Astartes John will be thankful for the chance to live.

  14. Something nice that Death Companies do (according to Lexicanum) is allow their members access to the chapter's armory so that they can fight their final battle with their favorite weapon.

I can't stop imagining Angron being placed in command of the Alpha Legion now. Angron, who's all about mass frontal melee assaults, trying desperately to get his sneaky bois to even show up to a fight on an actual battlefield without looking like the enemy.
