We’re also going to get working on moving the tomato trellis to the new 2022 spot in garden so it’s ready to go when the weather says its OK. We’ll also have a discussion about crop rotation in small scale gardens – and whether or not its really necessary in today’s day and age.

Smh, squirrels….. I'm having the same issues with my onions here in maryland .
We had the same problem with our onions in 2020. For us it was birds and squirrels 🐿 so since that experience we started covering our onions and garlic with enviro mesh netting similar to mosquito netting but stronger. We haven’t had that problem since. Beautiful tomato trellis! Thanks for sharing!

I had the same thing happen to our tomato and pepper plants last year. Except, whomever was doing it, was carefully digging around the plant all the way to the root and then gently setting the plant aside… we believe it was a racoon.
The cattle panels wouldn’t really work for indeterminate varieties of tomatoes though, right? Because they’re taller than the width of a panel?
Edit: we’ve been using the weave method with twine. I’d love an easier solution but not sure this other method would be tall enough….

Sprinkle cayenne pepper around them
Cover it with colored netting from the fabric store! Ladies tear it into strips and crochet it into scrubbers. Just put stones in all 4 corners and it’s another 60” wide and about $.69 a yard! Comes in all kind of colors!
It keeps those white butter flies away from cabbages, broccoli and other plants! Cheap fix… i buy a bolt every year for about 7 bucks!
The squirrels did that to mine. I've been doing a barriers and they chewed through it. They have been a bigger pest this year than ever.
Refuse to wear socks to force summer to come! Lol
I would find onions above the dirt and quite a few missing. I planted some marigolds around. It helped, but be careful the don't take over.

I have an great idea for you! My dad used the kid wind mills to keep birds away from our pool so we wouldn’t have bird poop in it all the time. They Totally work! Especially if they have a bit of a shine/reflection to them. If you are still struggling please try this out. Would love to know if it helped you out.

How close do you plant your onion starts and how do you amend the soil?
My onions are being tossed up out of the soil by moles I suspect. Mounds of soil like a mole run, and nothing. Even nibbled.

So sorry about your onions! I used that trellising system for my tomatoes last year for the first time too and I LOVED it!!! I need to remove them and replace them out further though, I had the too close to the barn last year and I couldn't prune the stems/suckers in the back.
What did you put in the holes before you planted the tomatoes? It looked like 2 different amendments.
Squirrels and chipmunks did that to several of my plants last year. I put a bunch of plastic forks in the ground (tine side up) and it stopped.
Can you put a net over them?
Maybe a net would keep your critters from scratching around in your garden
Scarecrow maybe?
Have you tried using rubber/toy snakes?
We've used them in the past to keep birds out of the strawberry patch.
The only thing is you have to move the rubber/toy snakes every day or the birds figure out they are fake.
They'll rip the toy snakes to shreds and then feast on your garden.

I know a lot of people who put fake snakes in their gardens to keep squirrels and birds out. It does a really great job
I planted onions and had the same problem with finding them pulled out and just lying in the ground. I watched and seems in the late evening there has been robins in the garden apparently searching for worms and end up pulling the onions out. That was the culprit for me! Hopefully you will see it’s the same culprit pulling your out too!

That happens to us every year the birds pull them up and then look in holes that are left for bugs. They leave them alone once the get bigger though. This year I hung a bunch of silver ribbons only happen once this year so maybe it’ll will work for you:)
Armadillo? I had one living under my deck last year and it would dig up everything around my azaleas. It got hit by a car a few months ago.
Definitely birds!! I've watched them pull my smaller plants out an they don't care what it is they pull out
I'm convinced that the birds love to mess with me! They pick up seeds and throw them all over the place!
