Patch 12.12 added a bunch of new malfunctions to Escape From Tarkov and it also added the ability to overheat your gun. While on the surface it seems like something you won’t run into very often, it turns out that this will greatly effect your guns durability, accuracy, and reparability. Check out the video where I do a deep dive into all things overheating!

Have you had your gun overheat in Tarkov yet?
I went through 4 30 round mags very quickly with a stock mp5 when fighting reshala and the boyz. had no overheating what so ever, not sure if it wasn't enough ammo but I went through the mags super fast and didn't even see the visual que either.
Thx for a great video! Keep up the good work Jesse! Cheers from Sweden!
It would be interesting to see how fire rate effects the overheat. Like a SCAR-L with 650 RPM vs a HK-416 with 850 RPM both firing 60 rounders of the same ammo.
Someone should probably do testing on RPK vs AK-74. In theory LMGs should perform better since they are made for firing a lot.
you can actually hear a difference if you are constantly shooting with 60 rounders around the half of the second mag the sound of the gun changes a little
Not going to lie, weapon malfunctions and overheating intrigue me and would love to see a proper system implemented. What I don’t want to see is erroneous malfunctions and overheating after one or two magazines of full auto fire. In reality it would take 8-10 full mags of repeated full auto mag dumps before seeing any reliability/accuracy degradation.
The only gripe for this I have is that most of if not all these weapons can withstand much more abuse than what is programed. 120 rounds through an AK platform won't cause significant overheating, AR's are more prone to these types of issues but most modern rifles won't have any issues until well into the 20k round count
Can't wait for them to add critical failures to guns where the gun will just explode in your hands so even your own gun can Jumpscare you
yet the russian ministry of defense requires their automatic weapons to be able to go through 6 mags (180 rounds) of sustained fire without jamming (without a suppressor ofc) (source: kalashnikov media). i have a feeling that heating is overstated in tarkov atm, just because they wouldn't get to implement it at all if it were realistic, because nobody's gonna blow through 6 mags of ammo in rapid succession. the guy over at kalashnikov media stress tested an AK-103, even after firing over 1200 rounds in rapid succession (probably even more, i don't remember the number) the gun was still somehow able to run (despite frequent malfunctions). iirc it was like 400/500 rounds before he even got his first jam.
Did he say how long it takes to cool down a gun? Is it just a few seconds? 30 seconds for full cooldown?
Mr. Kazam, I saw that collab with Brownels. WTF that's SICK
i think they should add a barrel durability so when you get back to your hideout you can swap barrels
Never thought I would see someone doing a IV8888 style meltdown in a video game. Love the video!
more reasons to use semi only, keeps the malfs down, and keeps the condition good
So most suppressors add back pressure into the gun and hold onto some of the heat from expanding gasses that would have just flown out the barrel but they also can act like a heat sink after firing. They add surface area for the heat to radiate from (this could work for brakes and flash hiders too). I haven't seen any actual testing of cooling from suppressors and brakesin the real world however.
Here's something concerning overheating in Tarkov I wanna know: is it affected by environmental weather? If it's pouring rain in a raid, will it take longer (even if only slightly) for a gun to overheat, and shorter for it to cool off?
Would be funny if you took the suppressor off when its red it blacked your arm
Great info thanks!
How the hell are you at PK level 3 already? Jesus, I just don't have anywhere near enough time to play that much. I'm definitely jealous!
Thanks! definitely helpful.
As someone who like to push and stuff im not a fan of inertia but over heating is great, stops people from spamming 73 rounds of bp to clear a room.
BTW, ricochet chance on helms is actually the amount of the hitbox in which a ricochet can occur, while each round has it's own ricochet chance ( you can see on nofoods ammo chart) and each round in game also should note it's own ricochet chance
I went to a range and fired over 1000 rounds recently and didn't have a single jam or overheat i am all for realism in game but it cant be real world variables thrown in unrealistic ways in an attempt to mix up game play that isn't fun. people trip in real life but if they added a trip mechanic people would see it as stupid as this is
Just lost a gunfight against 3 people. Killed 2 of them, and on the last guy, my RPK wouldn't shoot after reloading.
I would love to see an "everything you need to know about" for the new ballistic system and damage falloff, as it has some major flaws atm. currently you cant deal enough damage to one shot a player in the unarmored head at about 600m due to the falloff(the dead tree mountain on lighthouse has a great view and the new rangefinder for your rifle makes testing easy and accurate) i tested multiple rounds and its a real shame that sniping is basically nerfed into the dirt this wipe
Great video, thanks! 😀
Do shotguns really heat up faster? Large bore and less pressure should mean less temperature, ist it?
Remember switching to your side arm is always faster then reloading – Soap
Feels like mp7 and val for non pros is dunzo.
i really dont get how you and onepeg for example or even vox dont have 100k subs?! unbelievable
5:00 so what i would guess the heating and cooling means especially on ammo is that the normal ammo for example heats 5% faster. with -5% its that much SLOWER not cooling but slower heating up with some bullets and coolingmeqans faster cooling and faster heating for some attachments
I really like where Tarkov is going. I will never Escape if they keep it up.
The 'Heating' and 'Cooling' stat changes affect how fast the weapon heats up and cools down. A negative to heating and cooling means it heats up faster and cools down slower.
I shouldnt have to check the fault on my gun, Let me just do the clear without it, and if that isnt the problem dont fix the jam, and then il look at it
but most of us try to clear the chamber for our PMC to go "uhhhhh physically impossible without eyesight"
i feel like they should add a skill where your dont have to look at your gun when unjamming the bolt.
The 60-round Pmag has a high failure to feed chance if you didn't know.
Very helpful video, Jesse thank you! I'm a lot more informed on overheating now!
Heating: How fast said gun overheats. Cooling: How fast said gun dissipates said heat.
The over heating in this game is fucking ridiculous. It so damn exaggerated. But hey imaginary balance .
In real life muzzle brakes do nothing to keep your barrel from heating up, just a game mechanic to balance the new system.
Love the new systems although i think some weapons overheat way too fast compared to real life. Just look up a meltdown video of an ak-103. Goes for like 1300 rounds before failure. I also hope in the next iteration they add firing out of battery chance and you lose your weapon completely.
I kind of don't like how QUICKLY you're able to switch to the pistol. It just helps people that push to overheating. If anything it should be soo subtle no one would have noticed. As you'd be hyper focused on switching to your sidearm, when your primary had a malfunction. You might be fractions of a second quicker. Also shotguns don't really heat up that much. You don't see as much friction in the barrel. I can't speak for suppressed, but it would capture a lot of the heated gas.. I can easily dump like 12 shots on my shotgun in succession and I'm still able to handle the barrel carefully. I can't say that about other firearms with a single projectile. Just my $.02
Handguards are not meant to cool the gun they are meant to protect your hand from burn the reason they have the holes is to save material and to attach attachments
Thanks for the info Jesse, very nice
I don't know if anyone noticed this but every gun I have tested had a cook off or multiple cook off if you don't know what a cook off is look it up. I think it's called cook of at least but fire rate increased the hotter the gun got
