I wouldn't recommend starting as summon necro…they are a nightmare against bosses going through the game

Lightsorc is op when broke or starting ladder chain for packs and straight lightning for bosses use static if you need it…mage shield and ice shield and warmth for Dfence and you are ready

You said your merc always dies when doing mephisto. Do you know of the "advanced moat trick"? Theres a torch to the north/east of where he spawns that you can teleport into where your merc can't wander. Meph can get stuck trying to get to you here on his stairs. He can still get out every once in awhile, but ultimately it prevents your merc from dying to him on every run.

I would go fire traps till mid NM then respec.
Don't sleep on Cloak of Shadows and spamming Mind Blast; these one point wonders make trapsin so safe I don't even bother putting a point in Fade.
I don't use Shadow Warrior, she hurts rather than helps but I do put a point in Shadow Master do draw heat off my merc if he is getting swarmed.
Also you need to know that traps are minions, not spells. They do not benefit from FCR or lightning boosting gear. Trap-laying is boosted by IAS.
You will sometimes hear that FCR is unnecessary but it's helpful to have a decent amount for Mind Blast spamming and your Teleport staff when you land in the middle of a nasty pack.

the big problem of sum-necro is, without teleport you cant control your minions. thts shit an makes the build slow. but i played necro since D1. perhaps we get a new skill in 20 Years.

I'm with you Phil. The summon Necro with CE is my favorite character to play. Too bad I can never afford Enigma. That's why I always pick Sorc.
What you do is at the start of season you take one of these naked characters, put 30mf amulet, 25mf rings, 25mf gloves and boots from vendors, 3os p topaz helmet and 4os p topaz armor, full inventory of resistance charms and you got a 300mf little runner

What builds (other than paladin) would be best at killing diablo clone quickly with little gear?
I used to always make paladin, but now I want to try something different. I made a summon druid last season and it worked, but it was rather slow… I missed out on a few Dclones before I could get enough gear/summon skillers to be able to kill it.
Would you say Druid is a good overall Ladder start Char for selffound? Im torn between Sorc and Druid.

Im running foh and i usually just smite the bugs out of the way and then continue taking out the undead and demons clears chaos faster than my javazon by alot

Dude SweetPhil! You have not even hardly talked about the three stash things that will hold your gear from one ladder to the next. That is very important and very new. I don’t think it has ever been done before!
Ive only really played during season one but I think summon druid and aura Pali both run pretty well without good gear in normal and nightmare so I thought they might make good start characters, out of those two im not sure which I like best though
Gear independant build : summonning druid. It is not a "meta" build but it works fine, I cleaned until hell by myself and even if it is a little slow with big packs. Only issue is physical immunity but that 's not that much common. I have a blast to play it and generally do one each season (talking about old season of d2 🙂). One very good things is that skillers are cheap thus later, very easy to max out.The dps is very solid on solo target like bosses.

Druid – shockwave bear. Gets full damage super early with only 40 points needed and gets tons of life. Excels before enigma because bears can’t teleport anyway.
Good suggestion – I think the Smiter Paladin is very easy to start with, and with some gear he can kill ubers.
