Storm Chaser: 'Damage Is Widespread' From Hurricane Ian

Weather Nation correspondent Erik Fox reports from Punta Gorda, Florida, which appears to be one of the worst cities hit by Hurricane Ian as the back side of the storm has dislodged boats from the nearby bay and has taken out trees over 100 years old.

  1. The Decline of Intelligentsia, PART 6

Some search in vain for an "original thinker" who has made a name by advancing a workable theory about important questions of our times. They ask: Has any contemporary intellectual intervened effectively, with a comprehensive doctrine, or a single compelling ideology, in education, science, industry, socio-economic structure, defense, mass-communications, or in any other important actuality!

Why is it that the mere idea of calling upon one of them to prove his intellectual eminence

in the media, in government, or in social planning, is enough to evoke our pity?

Indeed, what are the origins of the decline of intellectual leadership, of the triumph of mediocrity,

of the emerging double standards, of the frantic hedonism-nihilism and of the preference of

immediate comfort and prosperity above long-term survival?

But most important, can the ruling parties and the so-called intellectual elite spearhead the task of stemming the tide of decline in our vital domains of thought and practice?

And if they can, will the prevailing methodologies help them deal with the totality of our problems?

Do they have the proper philosophy to do so? Can they discard their old, presuppositions? /

  3. Some hours ago I let go all the fish and reptiles of my aunt's pet store before I locked it up. Couldn't let the animals suffer if the power went out. Good thing for flooding. I just put them all in the rain water and they swam away.

  4. Looking around at the data, it seems the NHC may have greatly exaggerated the strength of the storm. You cannot find reports of a wind gust that was anywhere near what the NHC claims was the maximum sustained winds. That is typical for almost every storm. It used to be that surface winds were estimated to be something like 70-90% of flight level winds depending on the storm. The NHC used Andrew as an excuse to make it a flat 90%. Since then, their reports have been mostly unreliable. The NHC claimed the storm had sustained winds of 155. Find a reported wind gust over 130. Clearly this 90% rule needs to be dumped and the NHC needs to go back to using science instead of taking shortcuts. I'd like to see the NWS do the same with their phony severe thunderstorm warnings. You cry wolf enough, people are going to start ignoring the warnings.

  5. I can never understand people who won't leave the house and a storm is coming, and then someone has to save them, risk their life, they should be told that they won't be rescued 😡 I'm sorry but I don't feel sorry for them, they put the rescuers in danger.
