Answering Did We Destroy More Seedlings

Answering Did We Destroy More Seedlings

Henry and Irene have been living off grid full time since 2005 on a 43 acre off grid homestead in the high desert of Northern Arizona. Situated at 5280′ elevation, we enjoy four seasons of beautiful scenery and weather about 60 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

We grow most of our green beans, peppers, yellow beans, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, squash, garlic, and herbs. Specialty crops like asparagus, sun chokes, and lavender are supplemented by foraged foods including wild ground cherries, prickly pear, and other native plants.

Electricity is made using solar panels and one 400W wind generator. We power our buildings in two groups: Irene’s studio by itself, and house infrastructure: house, greenhouse, and workshops.

Thanks for joining us on our continuing journey.

Take care.

  1. Hi Irene, I know it's been a problem this year with germination on a variety of things, I don't use manure as such only chicken by products and I still have had problems mainly cucumbers and beans but it's only certain varieties so I wander are the seeds old before we get them even though it might say packaged only last month, Take care.

  2. You two have shonuff had the challenges this year. There is no doubt you folks have had a ton of things going on all at the same time became over whelming. Getting mighty late for maters to be planted with the heat we have had and what is coming so good luck on yours. Stay safe my friends and Happy 4th….

  3. Thank you for pointing out the problem with buying compost and cow manure. I had a few problems with seeds not germinating… Beans and peas mainly. Now I'm preparinga bed for some squash and bought composted cow manure for it. Now I'm worried. The plants are fairly small so should they be alright?
