None of my dogs are ever that weird about food. They all work just fine with leaving them with a food bowl.
Tryptophan turns into extra serotonin, and then your brain further turns that excess into more melatonin (sleepy chem) than is usually around. It's also dark by like 6pm in North America by that holiday, so your body naturally is going through that process already, because it is triggered by lack of light, then you add to it, boom, sleepy. source: Chubbyemu
