A new era of space travel | DW Documentary

A revolution in the history of space travel took off on 20 July 2021. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos flew in his rocket 106 kilometers into outer space. It may have only lasted around 10 minutes, but the trip was the precursor to commercial passenger flights into space.

The Bezos flight, as well as the one billionaire Richard Branson took just a few days earlier, herald a new era of space travel. This looks to be just the beginning of a rekindled space race. Observers suspect it could open up a lucrative market for space tourism. They’re also convinced that the next step will be inevitable: the establishment of human colonies in space. At some point, the day may come when the first person is born in space — or perhaps when humans reach Mars.

The film explores the fluctuations in space technology and the hype around commercial space flights – a topic that’s of great interest to Tesla founder Elon Musk, who founded the aerospace company SpaceX. Predicting the outcome of these developments is tricky. Musk has, in any case, announced plans to make humanity “multiplanetary”. According to him, that involves colonizing Mars and enabling life on other planets. Branson and Bezos, on the other hand, are “more interested in how we can use space to help Earth.”

Billionaires going on trips into space – is this really progress? Or is it all just about spending lots and lots money? These are questions we’re not yet able to answer.

  1. That gentleman with grey hair said “ what I call type one civilisation and type two civilisation “.! But in truth ‘the type one and type and type three civilisations’ are not the fruits of his thought because the first person who invented that kind of classification of civilisations wasn’t him and it was someone else by the name of : Kardashev and he was the one who came up with type I , type II, type III scales of civilisations.

  2. greedy corporations have destroyed our planet "mining resources" and now they are moving to the moon and then to other worlds. In all the sci fi movies out there about alien invasions were all about aliens coming here and attacking us so they can use our resources bc they destroyed their own on their planet. WE are those aliens, just in the beginning phase.

And now they want factories in space lol. Greed greed and more greed. It will never be enough and no one has the balls to stop them bc they are rich

  3. Humanity living on another planet will never happen. It goes against nature. It is just not right.
Nature will take its course that will prevent humanity from getting out into the space and live there. Nature include everything g such as humanity’s actions and natural actions that will prevent us from going out there and living there.
This is my opinion and I will stand by it.
200 years later and if the people are still watching this video tell me if it is true or not. I will be dead by then but leave the comments.

  4. That is how some funny scientists in the bible thought of building the tower of babel. These men have a hidden agenda that they won't tell the world.Perhaps a search for the aliens or the fallen angels which will come visit earth in 2024/2025.

  5. Problem you have is distance and time, distance is to far to colonise another planet
And it take to long to get there

Unless someone comes give us the technology what we have here on earth won’t do it no matter how hard scientists work

  6. This was not shocking, space flight is over 50 years old, there is nothing shocking about space flight, space tourism is a maladjusted use of private wealth,a pointless waste and only for show, noone wants to spend the same money as the cost of a house on a silly space thrill ride, this is a child's view of space and business ✌️❤️🇬🇧

  7. Notice that both people were maladjusted bomb victims who had their brains emp'd out of existence years ago, no human wants to be needlessly put into space, bezos and branston were just pointless publicity stunts, see what happens when you put a pair of business zombies in space, a better use is launch politicians and do not retrieve them!✌️❤️🇬🇧

  8. As the human race heads for disaster and extinction. Take a good look at who is headed for the stars to get away from the outcome they helped create.
when they return to repopulate the place this is the gene pool that will return.

holly bananas looks as though narcissistic egotistical traits are going to return with even more fervour.

  9. spacex performs orbital flights, the difference is very great in difficulty and usefulness, while the services offered by Blue Origin and Virgin, only serve to take a look at space and quickly fall back to earth, spacex offers satellite launches, cargo to the international space station, orbital tourist trips of several days, etc, it is a very different level and it is this documentary that shows them almost as equals

  10. Astronomers recently found the closest planet with the possibility of sustaining human life. It is comparatively close, only around 100 light years. At the highest velocity we've ever been able to send any object into space, how long would it take humans to travel to that planet from earth?
    ANSWER: about 2,000,000 years
