Production of the A10 Warthog:

On 10 February 1976, Deputy Secretary of Defense Bill Clements authorized full-rate production, with the first A-10 being accepted by the Air Force Tactical Air Command on 30 March 1976. Production continued and reached a peak rate of 13 aircraft per month. By 1984, 715 airplanes, including two prototypes and six development aircraft, had been delivered.

When A-10 full-rate production was first authorized the aircraft’s planned service life was 6,000 hours. A small reinforcement to the design was quickly adopted when the A-10 failed initial fatigue testing at 80% of testing; with the fix, the A-10 passed the fatigue tests. 8,000-flight-hour service lives were becoming common at the time, so fatigue testing of the A-10 continued with a new 8,000-hour target. This new target quickly discovered serious cracks at Wing Station 23 (WS23) where the outboard portions of the wings are joined to the fuselage. The first production change was to add cold working at WS23 to address this problem. Soon after, the Air Force determined that the real-world A-10 fleet fatigue was more harsh than estimated, forcing them to change their fatigue testing and introduce “spectrum 3” equivalent flight-hour testing.

Spectrum 3 fatigue testing started in 1979. This round of testing quickly determined that more drastic reinforcement would be needed. The second change in production, starting with aircraft No. 442, was to increase the thickness of the lower skin on the outer wing panels. A tech order was issued to retrofit the “thick skin” to the whole fleet, but the tech order was rescinded after roughly 242 planes, leaving about 200 planes with the original “thin skin”. Starting with aircraft No. 530, cold working at WS0 was performed, and this retrofit was performed on earlier aircraft. A fourth, even more drastic change was initiated with aircraft No. 582, again to address the problems discovered with spectrum 3 testing. This change increased the thickness of the lower skin on the center wing panel, but it required modifications to the lower spar caps to accommodate the thicker skin. The Air Force determined that it was not economically feasible to retrofit earlier planes with this modification

  2. The A-10 might be the greatest ground attack plane in history.

As with any service rivalries, the Army & Air Force will usually get into a fight at a pub.
    The Army always wins. ;).

Banter aside … I know Army veterans that served in Iraq & Afghanistan that have said they owe their life to A-10 pilots.
If they meet an A-10 pilot, he does not have to worry about his the cost of his beverages that night.

The Army guys will always pay for whatever he wants.

  3. It's like the B-52, in that it is the absolute best plane for the role, and keeps getting upgraded and upgraded because nothing has been made that can replace it. I think we'll be hearing the Purr of Freedom for years to come.

  4. Mr. H, I knew several Hog drivers. They were always fun to talk to about the A-10.
Once they were telling me on how they had to read "Stuka Pilot" by Hans Ulrich Rudel. It's a good read, especially since Rudel had a hand in the A-10s development.

  5. It is not just you Mr. H. These airplanes are BAD to the bone. Plus it looks BAD! And it's tough, shoot it to pieces and it takes its pilot back home. The troops on the ground love these flying tanks. Some very smart people took their time designing this bird. And they did an outstanding job at it. A very informative video. AND GOD bless and keep you all.

  6. I am glad you were able to get to watching the video from Insane Engineering. Incredible videos. The one for the Insane Engineering of the SR-71 is amazing as well.

I think there still will continue to be a need for the A-10 for quite some time even in modern warfare. Yes, it is only useful when air superiority is established, but it can be argued that for the F-35 to hold an equivalent amount of weaponry as the A-10, the same requirement is there as it loses its stealth advantages carrying weapons on the wing pylons. Also, only the F-35B can take off from any airfield. The F-35A and C still require a solid runway. There is also the case as discussed in the video of the A-10 being able to be supported pretty much at the most simplistic temporary airstrips close to the enemy lines with little need for relying on external equipment and with little needed to perform maintenance which plays a huge role in its ability to provide close air support. The F-35 still requires specialized advanced equipment and personnel for performing repairs and maintenance. A 4-year-old F-35 can require as high as 50 hours of maintenance per 1 hour of flight. Much of which is likely preventative maintenance to ensure such an advanced aircraft doesn't fail when it is needed most.

I am not putting down the F-35, just saying there is still room in the modern battlefield for a workhorse like the A-10 much like how there continues to be a use for the 70-year-old B-52 Bomber. Just because they are old doesn't mean they are useless and modernization has eliminated many insufficiencies.

  7. I do know what you mean the warthog is 1 of my all time favorite planes but not because it got me out of a few tight spots in my 5 deployments. My favorite cartoons as a kid was he man, thundercats, and gi joe. And in gi joe the A-10 was the main jet they used. Yes i am that old lol

The only plane i like better then the A-10 was the Corsair from WWII which i do believe was only used in the Pacific campaign. I could be wrong. Outstanding content as always keep it up.

  8. Bro Greetings and Salutations from Fair Grove Missouri America. You have every reason to love this plane. Like so many other American creations it has found that it didn't get used for it's primary role. It was supposed to be just a tank killer along with Apachie. And then they started using them for missions and jobs that were not at the top of its main mission of killing tanks. The Apachie ended up shooting Insurgents from miles away in Iraq and Afghanistan. And the A-10 can put rounds and bombs and missiles right where they are needed. I can't believe that the Air Force wants to get rid of these…but Marines and Army vets want this plane to go on. Israel wants them…Ukraine is training to fly them in Do it yourself DCS A-10 Flight simulators with the hopes that they get A-10s. and now they are doing the same for F-16 DCS(Digital Combat Simulator) home made simulators. All this was done with the help of the #1 A-10 Squadron with the help of the Air Force as well.

  9. 13:40 The F-16 and the F-35 are capable of doing air ground support but they are not nearly as efficient as the A-10 because both fighters are just to fast and they cant take as many hits from ground forces as the A-10 can.

Without a replacement that specializes in ground air support like the A-10 retiring the A-10 would put the lives of US and allied ground forces in more danger then is necessary.

In my opinion I see the US government being more concerned about money then those that are deployed to defend this great country of ours. And to me that is absolutely unacceptable.
