More than 1.5 million people are in the dark after Hurricane Fiona knocked the power out across all of Puerto Rico Sunday, triggering floods and landslides. We go to San Juan for an update from Democracy Now! correspondent Juan Carlos DΓ‘vila, who describes how privatization of the islandβs electrical grid coupled with a legacy of U.S. colonialism βhas really caused the crisis.β We also speak with former San Juan Mayor Carmen YulΓn Cruz as President Biden has declared a national emergency and federal aid pours in. βThe distribution has to be robust and has to be people-centered and community-centered,β notes Cruz.

Best wishes for the Puerto Rican people.
All I understand is e e e
My Dad Told me That His Mom Lived in there but she was alright
Please pray for the safety of the people of our fellow friends in Puerto Rico. Jesus is coming back, please repent daily and seek God.
Maybe try harder to sound like you are speaking English. PR is corrupt and this is karma. Clean up your behavior as behavior matters!!!
This is what government corruption, privatization, and corporate greed brings you. Projects go to favored companies who prioritize corporate profit over quality products for the consumer.
ππΎWhat I hear is βThe CORRUPTION is so Deep and Widespread here in Puerto Rico that the National Government can not be relied upon to get the Humanitarian Aid to where it needs to go.π«’
As a result, we want the Federal Government to takeover the Massive Operation of disbursing Federal Governmental Funds in times of Crisis such as this.βπ
βπΎWhich brings up OBVIOUS questions as to Puerto Ricoβs own Responsibility in cleaning up Corruption Problems and handling itβs own Affairs in some thing as Basic as disbursing Governmental Aid fairly, quickly, and HONESTLY during times of crisis.βΉοΈ
The next obvious question is the cleaning up and policing of itβs own Local Government in ALL Affairs.ππΎ
~They don't care
Send Heraldo back to Puerto Rico . He'll fix everything .
They want to blame cheetoman again but he's not arround anymore
Losers…
It is not colonialism or any specific type of economic or govtental type of system that is the cause. It is corruption caused by greed . It cuts across any economic systems and types of government and it has becomepowerul and globally entrenched. We must learn to rely on ourselves and each other instead o f govt. That doesn't mean that we cannot fight to take control of our govts They crave power and control and will do anything to get it and keep it….
For almost a year three Puetro Rican brothers all under the age of 30 were paid for by the police to put witchcraft on me relentlessly. They were always monitoring me, tracking my phone through the police and also the fire department,. They had tried wicked spells on me, one of them and their wife actually through the rain I would go back to the ESA I was staying at she would walk from one end of the building to enter the building just so they can make their point that they are watching me. So seeing this just brings relief in my heart that there is a God. But for you people to think that you are worth the tax payers hard earned money yet everyday your witchcraft bloodlines thinks they can get away with wickedness? Not to mention John Ramirez who also is a Puerto Rican preacher who came from witchcraft I don't see why the people that worships the Lord God here in this country should keep forking out money to support witchcraft tainted lands. The land is not yours yet you practice santeria like it is going out of style. Did you not read the Word of God? The land will spue you out for abominations on the land.
I pray that you repent for your abominations it is not America's responsibility to pay for your sins.
Jesus Christ is Lord always and forever.
Hallelujah.
Looking for all kinds of solutions. Instead of looking for God and coming back to God as the children of Israel. ISAIAH chp 29 vs 6 . Thou shalt be visited of the lord of hosts with thunder, and with earth quake , and great noise, WITH STORM and TEMPEST, and flame of devouring fire.
Why do they still have hanged power lines ππ. Bury them already !
Stupid planningππ‘
Puerto Rico is going to suffer because they have no love for their Neighbors . Haiti and the Dominican Republic . !
It sounds to me like they are having the same issues that the dirty south in America has been having since "Katrina" The governments are the same everywhere in the world GREEDY This is disgusting that the poor people don't get power? I don't understand how these countries that are running their country and doing it well need to be brought to the forefront to be modeled but I have not observed any country that is not having some kind of crisis so then what needs to happen is "a new way of doing things" because trying to make something work that has not worked twerking it here and there with the same results going further in debt. The corruption has to stop! Every country needs to be utilizing Solor Power if it is saving our planet! What is the problem? That is not rocket science! It is easy for the government to play with people's lives treating people differently rather than equally.
Hurricane Fiona came as a remainder that the IRS needs to leave the Island – ending IT for good – and so it is – Blessings.
It has Nothing to do with Climate Change but Everything to do with Human Consciousness – Human Thought & Actions affect the Weather.
The majority of Americans do not care.
The government considers it a no win.
But still a legacy to Americans indifference. Never can claim some righteous anything.
Puerto Rico
Non-democrat in power, Democrats: His fault
Democrat in power: Climate Change's fault
Puerto Rico is an American territory. Why can't the US fix and update their power grid?
Puerto Rico has the full backing of the U.S
Call me if it hits Haiti. Then, you'll see a real cluster fk, as it does, when it comes to Haiti.
STUPID QUESTION(s): what happened to the $13 BILLION they got from Trump just 2 years ago? That's over $4 million for every man, woman and child in PR… PLUS FREE TOILET PAPER! What they chose to do with the money is on them. They (the people that PRicans elected to represent them) rolled the dice and kept the money for themselves. Now 2yrs later you want more? How about get the money back from last time and use it the way it should have been used the first time?
This is hard to hear. I wish them well.
So she left after Maria hurricane and now lives in Massachusetts.
Put the wire under ground
I hate absolutely hate that BS stupid action of 45 during the Hurricane several yrs ago. He tosses paper towels as if it some kind of a game. WTF
So the disaster voultures get another fat check from our demise. And the corrupt low life politicians take everything they can the people left to suffer!
Omg
Love Mayor Cruz, a brave, fiercely intelligent, passionate champion of her constituents, and a public servant unfailingly willing to speak truth to power.
Puerto Rico has 0 support from USA. Yeah yeah, approval this and approval that. All bee ess. But Ukraine receives billions.
Sheβs so left and woke she even says hurricane Maria Like a dip shit Must say it the way the mother land says it lmao. Give me a break
Independence!!
I would rather stay in the cold…it's unbelievable the floods they have
Some people would say this is climate change related but you can't keep clearing land, forested and vegetated areas to build on and live on and expect the rain to be absorb into the environment now that the vegetation has been cut down, floods have always happened but now because we have built up so much in area's that we probably shouldn't have we can't just blame climate change for every weather event, if we knew the history of that place before people started living on it I bet we would find that flooding was always occurring frequently or infrequently, flattening land and roads makes it easier for water to travel, water always follows the path of least resistance.
