Ok so House Of The Dragon Episode 3 is now out and the episode is filled with easter eggs, lots of plot points that pull from the books and an ending that sets up some major things for the future. Throughout this video we’re gonna be breaking it all down and as always make sure you’re subscribed as we’re gonna be covering the show every single week.
Now this episode gives us a time jump of three years that sees a new character coming into the fold who we’ll talk about more in just a bit. When we last left them Daemon and Corlys Valerion had just formed a pact in order to stop Crabfeeder and his forces.
This union is symbolised in the opening shot which shows his banner of the seahorse along with the embers of fire representing house targaryen.
We see that one of Corlys’ ships is being burned by Crabsfeeder forces and this metaphorically shows how much they are destroying his fleet. Corlys in the book was said to have amassed the biggest navy in the world and his shipping realms allowed him to amass more money than the Lannisters. Though Crabfeeder initially started just ransacking pirates, this eventually moved to the bigger ships and he torturned the crew like what we see here. He hammered nails through their hands similar to a crucifixion and let the crabs feast on his victims before the tide rolled in and they drowned.
This opening is so powerful and we hear Caraxes high pitched whistle before the dragon roles in and destroys the landscape. Poor lad thought he was gonna get saved but the man gets smashed like that like button.
Can’t really show most of this as I don’t wanna get Daemonetised but Crabfeeder ends up hiding in the caves which forces Daemon to get his hands dirty and go in there later. Now arrows rain down which forces Daemon to flee and it’s likely that several attacks like this happened which the dragon having to leave due to the bombardment from the sky.

Almost forgot to give you a like
Pitty Rings of Power hasn’t been as gripping
"Now you're John Hammond"
Really good take. Keep doing what you're doing.
Shit is shit.
@heavySpoilers
Hey Paul, maybe people getting sick/cuts🤕 from the Iron throne is a nod to how toxic the throne is 🤔 and nodding to how the throne is literally the most dangerous place to be in the 7 kingdoms. See how it infects it’s occupants either physically, disease, madness or death, it’s a nod to the fact the throne is cursed but drives everyone to it (just like the ring in Lord of the rings saga).
God, the endless bitching about the battle. I say we take all of the battles out, you people are never ever satisfied.
Great review. Cheers
love the breakdown! keeps me entertained with HOD in between episodes and helps me catch things I would have missed during the first view of the episode.
Curious and wondering if anyone has the answer. At the end of 3 when Daemon is carrying the half body out of the cave. He's doing it ungloved, and the crab guy is covered in grayscale?. Were people unaware of grayscale at that time? Is this the first appearance of the disease? Does this mean Daemon will get grayscale?
I'd rather get destroyed by dragon or crab man than watch granny I got the job again. Every single video its on.
@16:50 – crops out one orgy mural, just to show two of them. nice!
Damon put poison on the throne that's why he keeps getting infected
Im really hoping Sid becomes the queen soon
Am I the only one who picked up on the lesbian relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent? It's clear to me they weren't 'just friends'. It also gives the fact why Rhaenyra is so angry with Alicent and Viserys so much more weight.
Established scams bro, why you pushing that garb?
Great commentary. I love your accent, too. (Yes, I'm an American)
Daemon soloing the pirate army was borderline cartoony, roadrunner-level funny.
What if the white stag is not for Rhaenyra 👀
I think we will have to rename the "estate" as Spoilery Rock…😆
@heavyspoilers Congratulations ahead of time on a million subscribers!
I liked the episode a lot. Paddy Considine acted his heart out, fight scenes were good and the character development was interesting.
BUT, I can't help but feel a bit cheated that they built up the Crabfeeder as this dangerous and fearless fighter only for him to have less that 2 minutes of screentime and be killed off screen in what looked like a fierce 1v1 cave fight that we didn't get to see.
I would have happily given up a dragon fight scene in exchange for that.
Best thing on TV but there’s something missing after excellent episode 1……S1 Episode 2 or 3 of GOT, at this stage there was the Starks finding a dead Direwolf & huge Stag who died together after fighting, where the acting was so powerful you could feel this had a tragic symbolism of foreboding than anything I’ve seen on HOTD
I appreciate what Tolkien created. I have read the books and watched the movies. I also enjoy the new show so far. Sorry not sorry.
Remember the days when you just watched a TV show as it came out? You didn't need to review and breakdown each individual episode?
The fact that Daemon don't say a single word and still steals the scene is screaming quality.
how u gone scare a dragon away with fire sticks? complete nonsense! dragons are fire! smh. they didnt make this show properly.
It’s a little verbose but maybe worth reading. I’m an adequately mediocre writer with a modicum of knowledge & rare flashes of wit. I do hope you read it & enjoy it & possibly come away with your own opinion & argument which I’d love to read. Thanks!😊
Nice breakdown but one thing that many reviewers & reactors keep bringing up is the suspension of the suspension of disbelief in the battle scene and/or the “plot armor” Daemon supposedly enjoys against the archers & the arrows. However as an amateur archer let me tell you, that’s no cake walk shot. Let me break it down a bit in a totally non-prolix but possibly insufferable manner.
To begin, as we are in modern times saturated with Hollywood’s gradiose special effects & even the visual fireworks of modern video games, I think some of our belief/disbelief perceptions have many thinking bows & arrows is like shooting a modern fire arm or even a heavy weapon system with ballistic calculating computers where the rounds enjoy “flat-like” trajectories. First think about outdoor or even indoor ranges where in the latter the environment can be controlled. It’s still challenging shooting a distance & shooting accurately. Targets can be distanced anyway from 10 yards to 20 to 30 & so on. Bow & arrow technology also have a huge influence. There is also the differing types namely recurve vs compound in addition to the widely variant specs bows enjoy such as size, draw weight, draw length, arrow weight, etc. Modern bows enjoy modern materials namely alloys, plastics, composites, etc. modern bows enjoy an insane power to weight ratio – that is they’re very light but very strong, powerful & while not really related to importance, they’re more durable. Consider those Westerosi bows: they’re likely wood along with wooden arrows. So these are just some of the factors.
A huge X factor is the archer namely his or maybe her skill. We usually have competitions in ideal conditions. Let’s say the maximum effective range for our competitors today is 50 yards. I don’t think people realize how far that is & that’s on a stationary target under sun or lights in a calm environment. As we all know, arrows like bullets aren’t laser beams that have a flat & straight trajectory; the have a descending trajectory & arrows markedly slow down over the distance. Arrow specs obviously play a huge role. All the physics of bows & arrows, hell ballistics & weapons in general is crazily complex & fascinating.
So lets slap some of this hodge podge of info together into something logical & cogent. Let’s assume Essos bow & arrow tech was the pinnacle of technology at the time & the Trearchy enjoyed the Princes wealth so they had some of the best made bows & arrows. When we say “Maximum Effective Range” of the archer we’re assuming this is the shot the archer can make the majority of the time (lets say 7 of 10 or +-) at 50 yards at a stationary target under ideal conditions inside an indoor range. Hell, we’ll make it 75 yards & again, under ideal conditions. Those Trearchy bows & arrows, what’s the max effective range of the actual weapons with the maximum draw weight, etc. We’ll say it’s 300 yards. I.E. an arrow can travel that distance. That’s a long distance. Remember a lot of these max effective distances are under ideal conditions. Now we are assuming all these archers are strong, indefatigable, & talented & in possession of some of the best archery equipment in Westeros or the Free Cities. This is under battlefield conditions around the sea which is always nasty. You’re at least always damp & often wet. Sand gets everywhere & it’s usually tilted a bit toward one end of the temp extremes; it might not be blisteringly hot or bone chilling cold but as we know wh try en your wet & it’s overcast a 60 degree temp can really feel like it’s 20 degrees colder. Beyond that, there’s battle fatigue. Then while on battle, you’re under constant duress & against the Westerosi crown of the Targaryen Dynasty, you’re always distracted by the threat of a dragon attack. In prolonged warfare the negative effects of battle can stack & have a culmukative effect. Fatigue, constant discomfort, & incessant bouts of duress can be taxing & take you off your A-game. Now consider shooting a Daemon Targaryen from a cliff above & offset from the battlefield of the sea-level beach. The archers are not only a marked distance away but on a significantly different plane or axis, if you will. They are shooting with wet & sanday hands which compounds the bad effects of sand. What’s more, it’s a hazy, and damped aired environs where line of sight is obscured by the smoke filled air. Add in fatigue & consider the mental & physical drain of shooting repeated volleys of arrows. Nock the arrow, draw the bow string back, hold it, hold your breath…….hold, hold, aim, track, aim, lead….hold…loose. Think of doing that in the high tens to hundreds a day all in condensed episodes of battle.
So conservatively, the archers are likey shooting at ranges of 250 yards & more. The aim is going to tricky: the archers are aiming to shoot an arrow with a parabolic flight trajectory. As Daemon is wisely doing staccato sprint bursts to mix up his movement, the archers not only have to aim high significantly even though they are up on cliffs but have to shoot with a salient lead to meet the moving target. In other words, this is a difficult shot even under ideal conditions. We haven’t even mentioned the wind either. That’s another factor to consider. At those ranges, Daemon would look like a small shilouette too. If anyone has shot at an M16/M4 range, you know the torso sized targets at 300m is no broadside of a barn type target. It’s a small shiloette. These are probably aome of the most salient factors & details illustrating that shooting Daemon with arrows is no easy feat with high probability. Oh, also, if you look at the cliffs, it seems like there’s anywhere from 20-maybe 49 archers. That’s a decent number but it’s not loke they can rain down a ludicrous hail storm of arrows that can block out the sun light like in 300. From the looks of it, there wasn’t like 100, 200 or 300 archers sending wave after wave of arrows.
So, in summation, factors such as bow technology, battlefield issues like fatigue, weather, environment, & the type of shooting such as arrows shot far away & above a beach at a moving target show that this was a difficult shot & a low probability hit let alone multiple hit at one time type deal even with 40 archers raining down a synchronized volley of arrows. The idea that by the law of averages Daemon would be hit by at least one arrow is arguably improbably as well. It’s a difficult enough shot trying to hit a sprinting target with a small silhouette at distance which is only made more compex & difficult by all the exacerbating factors such as the weather & stress of the battlefield. For the archers to land 3 relatively synchronized hits even though he was stationary at the time is obvious skill but also a lot of luck, among other things. If anything, they made the shooting & close landing arrows seem like the shot was easier & a bit more probable than actually was given the battlefield conditions, weapons, weather, etc. Obviously it’s a more chaotic, dangerous & dramatic battle scene with the perception of high probability arrow hits than an arrow hit or kill being a boring & unlikely improbability. That’s why the 3 arrow hits & total encirclement of Daemon more tense & dramatic. Again, In reality, hits these types of shots under those conditions with that technology & all the other factors involved make a hit rather difficult & lethal hits outside of a lucky headshot with armor on pretty difficult & arguably unlikely. This wasn’t Rickon Stark running down a slight slope in a straight like away from the shooter on a clear day fresh out of bed on a full night’s rest in the opening minutes on the first day of battle.
So really in summation this time, I believe with the evidende given that the idea that arrow hits should’ve been closer & hits & even mutiple hits highly improbable & a myth. This is born out of viewers who are overly sensitive & on the lookout for plot armor & salient violations of suspensions of disbelief especially with a Song of Ice & Fire palette that still has a foul taste in its mouth after the controversial, & rushed & forced feeling of Season 8. Viewers are more sophisticated & get irritated with rushed, forced & coerced episodes & seasons. Something different happened here. There is a sense that there was a desire by viewers for more danger & risk at stake for Daemon which would have upped the drama & intensity of it all even more. I’d argue that more hits & insanely difficult shots being made would have made it seem a bit contrived & hokey. While viewers are more discerning & sophisticated we have also become desensitized to the probable & blinded by drama. Not to insult viewers but they’ll criticize Rickon Starks lack of a zig-zag but then cheer on & accept an almost comically improbable albeit impressive & aesthetically nice John Wick fight where he shoots waves of attackers at close range with modern firearms & is able to avoid a lethal hit.
Daemon and Rhaenyra are going to bone.
I thought the best scene of the episode is when Rhaenyra rides back into the hunt camp with the killed boar and covered in blood like a badass!
I wonder if they eat the dead dragons? >:/
you know SOMEONE is cutting up the D as a aphrodisiac… >:3
I know it's episode 3 but number 2 is the "magic number" lol. Because, baby Aegon is the 2nd son and it is his 2nd birthday. Then we have the Hightower bros talking during the party. And then the Lannister twins. And notice, Viserys loses 2 fingers in this episode. Also 2 stags. And then we have Corlys and his younger bro. And of course Deamon the younger bro of Vis. So this is also a second child theme here.
Oh my days, this is the first video I’ve seen your face.
I remember watching you on Don’t Flop nearly 10 years ago haha you had some quality lines
I don’t get how the triarchy still have a fleet. I mean take a dragon and burn the fleet, it’s not rocket science. Even if they are still holed up on the caves, just siege them and starve them out.
If the Crab Feeder has Greyscale, does that mean Daemon contracted it when he carried the Crab Feeder's torso out of the cave?
Wouldn't Daemon get grayscale from touching the Crab man??
@14:30 Aegon II is her half brother, not step brother
The jokes you make? A1 sauce, friend. Very informative and entertaining. Can't wait for the next episode!
I like that you changed your pronunciation of aegon. I always thought it was pronounced like egg-on because of the wonderful dunk and egg novellas that gave me more of westeros.
"Daemon-etized" Badoom-Tschhh! Hahaha nice one.
That you have to make a video explaining the episode means it was a poorly written episode. This is getting very irritating. They're following the same path that ruined season 7 and 8 of GoT. Rush rush rush rush…. tune in after the episode to understand what you just watched. So tired of this lazy crap from HBO.
Also after refering him as your grace, she also refers him as my love later in the episode.
Does Daemon get greyscale now? He was dragging the crab king with his bare hands
Nice breakdown, Matt and Paddy are absolutely nailing it🤧👍!!!
