Cost of living crisis: UK inflation hits 40-year high of 9%

It hasn’t been this bad since the early 1980s. Confirmation today that in the year to April, inflation hit a 40-year high.

The figure of 9% was expected and yet shocking – the government seemingly at a loss.

The prime minister promised to look at “all measures” that might help, but his chancellor admitted they “cannot protect people completely”.

Opposition politicians and campaigners accused the government of not protecting people at all and called for an emergency budget, and a windfall tax on oil and gas producers.

  1. 9%, and – shock, horror! POSSIBLY 18% in 2023?
Take a look around. Every single item in my weekly shop at my local a//a has gone up by either 20% or 25% in the last four weeks. A lot of this is grocers taking advantage and shamelessly profiteering – thats where the government most needs to lay the law down. Thieving bastards.

  4. Just imagine retiring as a registered nurse, using all your income/salary to pay rent and tax without any good investment or means of extra cash, tending to leave your profession/job that has been part of you for many years with no good funds. How will you cope?
