How often do adventurers come across swords that don't have an accompanying scabbard? Wouldn't a bandit have one? And if it's got no scabbard, it's probably not worth picking up anyway. Scabbards help keep the oil on the steel that is absolutely not stainless and needs that oil so it doesn't rust.
Even more so with curves swords (Katanas, sabers, dao, etc) Even with different katanas, some have stronger curves than others, really these things are tailor made
If you have a belt, and don't mind it being open in the elements until you get to a blacksmith and/or a leather worker, just put it through your belt. People did this historically, but with a sheath/scabbard to protect it from the elements better. Or if you have oil on hand, coat the blade in oil and it will repel water for a time. Do this regularly along with sharpening your blade, and you will be able to keep it in good shape without using a sheath or scabbard.

A lot of the time my players' enemies are human/humanoid with the campaign im running, so if its a sword of decent quality we just assume the body/lootpile also has the sheath for said sword unless otherwise noted.

This is how you fix longswords in d&d 5e to be actually useful. Introduce scabbards, items that can be made for a specific sword to be able to wear the sword, and draw/stow it easier. Suddenly, every adventurer needs to have some kind of sword. Even the polearm master or the crossbow expert should pack a sword as a backup weapon.

Open ended sheaths with clasps is the best way to go. I mean, you're constantly in armor anyways so having a blade that may cut along your armor is a worthwhile give to have a universal scabbard/sheath.
I always believed that all weapons, that can be used, found adventuring came as a complete package scabbard at all. I personally have them in display or transportation cases.
Having to hand carry my sword because it was laid bare on an altar with no sheath makes it more real. Playing dnd with history and weapons buffs was awesome. Also my buddy is a trained katana master so his useless sword skill made for interesting real life rule settling. Iaijutsu is almost like magic in real life.
That explains why the cock of my dragonbron didn't fit on that kobold… I mean she died by crushed lungs but… At least now I have an explanation of what happened!

Make a custom sheath, most swords have a custom one anyways as they're not a universal shape
