The primary benefit is that it protects local business that employ (local) people, pay (local) people, and make things that local people can buy without transferring entire industrial sectors offshore, or financing the largest boat-building capacity the world has ever seen (a title that once belonged to the USA) in China. This is why tarrifs were once called protectionist and why the globalist billionaire class hates them.
