The atmosphere in fo3 only exists until a character open their mouth.
The game is too silly for that, it doesnt take itself as serious as FO1 and frankly, the humor isnt as good as 2 (even if less intrusive)
I also can't say i enjoy exploring the world because its overworld is really bad with all the metro stations and generic super mutant. The ratio of enemies positioned in the map sucks, almost everything is raiders or super mutants, i would expect hardwr conflicts and more well design encounters akin to something like swordflight or even FO1 itself.
As it is, fo3 with the lack of sprint button, metro stations and lack of enemy variety on map… Its rough
Picking the east coast for Fallout 3 was a smart choice that allowed them to "start clean" and reintroduce everyone to a dormant series with much less package than doing their take on a continuation of the west coast storyline like New Vegas did, which it might not have been able to do with as much success if 3 didn't revitalize the series and introduce so much more people to the franchise. F3 managed to feel "new" to people while being a part of an established franchise.

I love all the fallout games now, but Fallout 3 was the first I played. It was such an escape, a little fleshed out world of consequences. The best part for me though, was wandering the wasteland while listening to Zur's soundtrack. It was genuinely meditative and brought together other post-apocalypse themes from other things I was enjoying; The Road, The Book of Eli, A Canticle For Leibowitz, 12 Monkeys.
Definitely still a janky game at times lol, but I think the silent 1st person character gives you a level of immersion that feels like it surpasses the ageing graphics and occasional quirks to this day.

About the npc interactions: is there any mods for new Vegas which can fix that? I noticed that and kinda breaks the immersion and i feel like there’s a mod for that.
I've only played 4 ,I do love 4 and have it moved in VR as well. I first played it in 2019
Out of all the Fallouts, I like 1 and 3 the most, which I guess are the most apocalyptic of the whole bunch. I love 1 for the unparalleled sense of dread that permeates every place you visit, every character you talk to, action that you do to carve your own story in the wastes. Its vibes are on the razor's edge and I absolutely love it for that.
On the opposite side, I love 3 because it gives me a fun romp through the half-demolished ruins of a civilization, on a quest to fill my inventory with thousands of pounds of random weapons and armors and other assorted junk, after shooting their previous owners in the head. It's murderhobo D&D in post-apocalyptic FPS form, with a DM that cares way more about the moment-to-moment experience than the overarching story.
My man is not only a Fallout New Vegas fan, but also a Fallout 3 enjoyer, respect +

Between Andale, and whatever vault that contained all the Gary's completely sold me on atmosphere as a kid when this game came out. Neither of those two locations had quests yet they both haunted me

Started another new playthrough a few days ago, talk about perfect timing. Top tier video! Great to see a light being shined on how I can keep returning to a game made when I was still reading my SPECIAL book in real life lol.

I think you are 100% on point when saying that Bethesda is good doing world design but not world building or compelling stories. Skyrim is proof of that. People don't like Skyrim because of the incredible characters, the main story, or anything related to it. People just choose a direction and start walking, exploring the caves and crypts they found, selling loot, leveling up and just going around doing random stuff. I really can't believe someone finished the main campaign of Skyrim and start clapping "oh wow, what an incredible story. I really felt like I was doing things myself and not just following orders for every single person I met".
Bethesda is like a tabletop Master that instead of designing a campaign for the players to explore and make their own, they create a set of characters and narrative that they think is so good, they want their players to watch as a film. Yes, you are there in the middle of the room where it happens, but you are there to watch it happen, not to decide it.

The fact that bottle caps alone incentivise the player to do insane quests beyond reason, and that the wasteland in general accepts it as payment…
You are virtually doing everything for free or for a mere scrap. By default that is all that remains after the Great War, but it's wild to realize that without payment, you're basically doing everything just because you have the skills to.
Sounds like capitalism..

I agree that the atmosphere and vibe is better than new Vegas, but what I think makes people go to Vegas more like myself was the QOL updates and the addition of hardcore mode just made the gameplay feel more immersive and replay ability.
To be fair to mick and Ralph, I’ve found that when you’re good enough friends with someone, you don’t even need to talk to them to work together well. I heavily doubt the developers took this into consideration while developing their characters, but I think it makes sense that they don’t talk to each other much.
I never thought about how each game works around you or only to you. I wish these mechanics and world building could be put together with more of the gameplay of 4
I will say fallout 3 has way more console players then nv does
My dumb reason for not liking fallout 3 was: the color pallet. It suffered from that 2000s "everything is brown and boring" color scheme. I want a variety of colors other then shades of brown.
I believe the primary reason fallout 3 is still talked about is because fallout new vegas happened. Bethesda, as good as they are at some things. Is extremely weak in the writing department. FO3, Skyrim, FO4, Starfield, all have writing that's absolutely below the par required to make those game worlds really shine.
