A Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine surfaced close to a Russian spy ship to warn the crew they were being watched as they loitered near Britain’s vital undersea cables, the defence secretary has revealed.
In a statement to the Commons, John Healey said he had been forced to change the navy’s rules of engagement so British ships and boats could get close to the Yantar research vessel and better track its activity.
“I wanted President Putin to hear this message: we see you, we know what you’re doing and we will not shy away from robust action to protect this country,” Healey told MPs, referring to the incident in November.
A defence source told The Times that the British crew aboard the submarine sent a polite and unprecedented message to the Russians, including the words “good morning”.
“The crew were very polite. They sent a message informing them they had been watching what they were doing and then they [the Russians] swiftly left,” the source said.
