I think the maskwood nexus is in there mostly if you wanna put in more non-zombie goodstuff with the alternative commander (some spice like ojer taq/mondrak with mirror box, perigrine drake, tortured existence, guardian scalelord, windborn muse)
Varina vs new Temmet is an interesting discussion since I think they generally head similar go-wide zombies list that want to attack (versus being aristocrat synergies). The main difference between them is that Temmet himself is mostly a payoff for the strategy since he's an overrun effect in the command zone compared to Varina who is an enabler since she is an enabler because she draws you into your pieces (while filling the graveyard!).
I love these new cards. Renewed solidarity goes into every deck with a commander that makes a specific creature type token.

I will keep Varina as my commander but there are definitely good adds in there!
I think having 3 Esper commanders for zombies will diversify a bit more than having only one Mardu option with vampires. Also, none of the zombies have Eminence so I don't think that on a power level, it would dwarf Dimir or Mono-B zombie deck options. The 3 are all designed around drawing and discarding though so I expect Esper zombie decks will be similar regardless of the commander. Now maybe I make Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir my commander and make it a zombie knight deck putting to good use that Maskwood Nexus….🤔

Excited to update my Lurrus companion EDH deck with Hashaton as the new commander for some esper action! 🧟🧟
The Maskwood Nexus doesn't make sense in this deck but if you look at zombies from a broader perspective many zombie support, lords, and token producers are non-zombie necromancers (think The Scarab God, the Gisas and Geralfs, Grave Titan, Jadar, etc.) so Maskwood exists to turn them into zombies to benefit from the zombie synergies.
God Eternal Bontu imo single handedly keeps mono black zombies alive. The art is one of my all time favorites and as a draw engine in the command zone it is absolutely worth losing blue and white
On Wings of Gold pumps all tokens, not only zombies

I think Maskwood is there for The Scarab God, the creatures with embalm/Archfiend/Timeless dragon/Grave Titan

Maskwood nexus can make changeling tokens. Better ways to spend 3 mana but that's my only guess why it's in the deck

Rot Hulk is actually a lot cheaper if you get the Mystery Booster 2 version. It's like 8-11 bucks right now. The site is not picking the MB2 version up for some reason. That change alone gets the two decks a lot closer in price.

good value for sure. i don't think it will push the type to esper tho……the main kink in the armor of any multi-color zombie deck is mana generation…..now if they made a good sultai zombie commander then I could see it. In terms of both support and speed I highly doubt esper will eclipse dimir just bc in 2 colors it is around the middle of the mid-range in speed and pushing to 3 colors will further slow it down and zombie as a type doesn't seem to be equipped to do control very well nor would it be very fun imo.
Maskwood nexus is probably there to poop out changelings which are zombies too but I agree that it feels out of place.
Temmet feels way too similar to Varina tbh, he copied her whole flow bar for bar.

Maskwood nexus makes all your zombies also armies. That means any amass lets you put counters on any creature you control.
I’m excited to see Zombie Master come back, especially since he has three deprecated abilities in one; xWalk, regen, and symmetrical anthems. Swampwalk is underrated as evasion too considering Urborg is everywhere.

I don't think this will replace Wilhelt as the peak zombie commander, but I do think it will probably be second best or maybe third behind Scarab God. Also I think Maskwood nexus is in because it is one of the few ways to just pay mana to make a "zombie" token. Also On Wings of Gold and Renewed Solidarity are going to be nuts in all white decks that make tokens like angels, cats, and spirits as wells and commanders that flood out tokens like ghave, necrobloom, and edgar.
I am so excited for this deck! Especially for Hashaton

Then the other three players instead make tight budget decks and team up against the one with the unstoppable deck.

Bontu's monument comboes with Acererak the Archlich as good drain while also making him cheaper. Probably why its so expensive.
nothing will ever beat Wilhelt. Decayed is one of the best thematic mechanics they have printed in a long time. Truly feels like you are playing zombies.

the art in this deck is insane. renewed solidarity is probably one of the best card arts of the last few years, but even besides that a bunch of the reprints got some amazing new art that unfortunately we didn't get to see in this video. i'd highly recommend going to scryfall or something to take a look yourself
Wings of Gold makes ALL tokens flying, not just zombies. That enchantment is going in ALL white token decks from now until the end of time
Personally, I kind of want to go All-In on cycling lands for Temmet. Get the old ones like Blasted Landscape, Barren Moor, Drifting Meadow, and so forth. There are two cycles of mono-color tapped Cycling lands, in addition to the Deserts already in the deck. And then crank the land count to the 40s. Just run 6 extra MDFCs that are board-wide combat tricks.
I disagree that decks get “stuck”. That simply doesn’t happen in Commander. People don’t always just play the best Commander for any archetype. In fact, most don’t, particularly because its too easy.
How powerful/weak is this Ham Sandwich that enables such combos?, lol

I'm fine with 2 per set. I just wish they had more variety with the colors they choose. It does feel like certain colors are favored over others. For example, we almost never get Dimir or Grixis commander decks, but almost always get Naya decks. Hopefully they keep doing what they did here.
If this deck can get the tokens to 6 power consistently, Dreadhorde Invasion is going to be fantastic.
Maskwood Nexus was (very generously) included as a way to enable any NON-zombies you might want to swap out at some point. #OopsAllZombies If you aren't doing that, go slap it in a different deck.
It's Just another Zombie deck… C'mon the set gives so much more possibilities than this :/

esper zombies is cool but when will we see a new grixis zombie commander? im stuck running kraum and tormod…
As for commander products I wish we could just go back to having one set of 4-5 decks per year. The yearly commander decks used to be an event, something to look forward to and weren't consigned to be chained to the theme or setting of whatever the present new set is instead of having their own theme.
Varina already made esper zombies the best option
