Please do more of these videos. As a Brit, the only history we were really taught was how Britain saved the world from Hitler. I get that our past is messy and, quite frankly, horrific, but pretending it never happened doesn't improve anything, but does lead to patriotism and far-right thinking.

Dear Simon, I feel compelled to correct one error in your description of the beginning of the Arab Israely conflict.
Once the British Empire left the Protectorate of Palestine the Jewish leaders declared the independence of the State of Israel and the Arab countries (Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Irak, Yemen) declared war apon the new Israel state. The Nakhba was not launched as the Nakhba is the term used by the Arab Palestinians to describe the loss of the war by the Arab countries. Their failure to destroy the estate of Israel and the subsequent migration of part of the Arab palestinian population from the new state. We also need to take into account that many of the Arab and Palestinian leaders urged the Arab Palestinian population to leave their homes and return shortly after the state of Israel was destroyed.

Records show the longest period without famine between 1500 and 1947 (British starting taking control in 1757) was that between 1902 and 1943. It was the British that made beating famine an issue for Indians. Indeed several famines were caused by scorched earth policies (Indian on Indian), prior to the British taking control.

Interesting but a bit naïve on this occasion Simon. Presenting problems is easy – solutions are much harder and Britain had to wrestle with often two completely different sides so it’s no surprising compromises happened. I would concede though that the Middle East was a complete cock up.
