Thank you! Rn, it seems that Rules Unwritten are that the only outcome is death, meaning that you always just burn through enemies like they're consumables. But wouldn't it be cool if rematches were a thing and not everything ended in death lol?
I’ve always run HP as a combat currency that represents endurance, will and luck. As HP depletes, you’re becoming tired…you’re a little demoralized…you made a mistake or the opponent was lucky. Once HP is gone, you’re defeated: battered and unconscious, at sword point, ran through (if the narrative warrants).
Death Saves are more “Defeat Saves” and depend on the narrative. If you succeed, you’re back in the fight. If not, you’re done, but maybe not dead. You simply cannot find the will or ability to fight anymore.
I’ve found this to be a major boon to the emergent story, especially on the PC-facing side, as they’re not always feeling a fight to the death.

You need to add fighting or you wind up with murdder hobos because the players usually want to do things and be interactive with the story
