Her somewhat negative reaction to the water (at first) was because (I think) nice warmish water feels like being boiled alive to some dogs. I have to bathe my dog (also a duck hunting breed) in what I consider freezing 🥶 water.
My Aunt owned many, well they owned her and my uncle. They male Hunter was national grand champion in hunt and field trials. He was the best most relaxed guy when he wasn't working.
I have a 13 year old Chesapeake Bay retriever and she is such a loveable stubborn girl. 😊

Family friend has a Chessie and she was the only Chessie I've met that hated swimming or being wet.

This is not my first time meeting a chessie, sadly mine had some very crap owners whom I eventually had to fire because they wouldn't take my advice or even accept my offer for a free 1 to 1 training session with me. I called them "the demons" because they literally were. A chessie with no clear rules, boundaries and expectations at home is impossible, even in an environment where those things are black and white for 99% of other dogs. Sigh. The joys of working with pet dogs. 😂
I had two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. 1 female, who smiled and preferred swimming in the ocean or even a muddy pond to bath torture. The male loved the bath as soon as the soap and rubbing started, and he called me by my name. Loved those dogs so much. I still can't resist a Chessie when I come across one. The female swam like a submarine, just the nose out of the water, the male swam with his most of his chest up out of the water. We live a block from the ocean and if the door was not securely locked they would take themselves to the beach for a swim even in winter. They have been gone for many years now.

My dad adopted a Chesapeake Bay Retriever when I was a baby and fell in love with the breed. They're on their fifth or sixth one now. The dogs are unbelievably bonded to their family and generally couldn't care less about anyone else. They can be very difficult, are incredibly stubborn, and have a very strong moral compass – anybody from other dogs to kids can not break the house rules without causing severe anxiety. When I used to bring my lab mix over (who was in the habit of trying to steal any food he could get his paws on), their chessy would spend the entire time guarding the utility room the dog food was kept in to keep my dog away. Their dog never even tried to break into the dog food while mine repeatedly managed it when I would stay over if their dog didn't keep watch. When my brother and I were little, if we fought as kids do, our chessy would get between us and not let us near the other. On the other hand, if they think you've been unfair towards them, their stubbornness knows no bounds. This sweet girl wasn't afraid of the water, but she was incredibly unconformable being away from her family and stuck work a stranger. They're quite a breed, but you're right – NOT for a first time dog owner!
My favorite video so far, having owned and raised Chessies for many years. Such a classic Chessie reaction to a bath. 😄 For Chessies wet is wonderful except for baths. Most hate them. I'm surprised she didn't give you the classic Chessie smile to try to get out of it. 😁 They definetly are not a breed for everyone. They are very smart and think for themselves. They have tons of drive and can be protective of anyone or thing that they consider theirs. If trained and socialized properly there isn't a job they can't do. Several of mine have been therapy dogs. Working with severely physically and mentally disabled adults. I love many different breeds. And have shared my life with numerous breeds of dogs. But will always have a Chessie. Their love and devotion can't be beat. 😊❤️🐾

Nah, friend's mom had one. She was a rocket on land or the ocean, and wonderfully energetic without being tiresome and annoying. That said, I live in the bay area, so no surprise I know of this lovely breed.
I’m actually from Maryland around 15 mins from the Chesapeake Bay and let me tell you these guys are even a rare breed to see there. I think in my time of living there I had seen one. Such pretty dogs but not common at all.
