I’ve been hearing so much hype about @lostislejohnsisland on John’s Island (I did NOT mean to say James Island 🙈) so I tried it on my last trip to Charleston. The restaurant is completely outdoors, and specializes in wood-fire cooking – and I loved it! The patio was so cute! The cocktails were refreshing. And most importantly, there wasn’t a single miss on the menu. Every dish I tried was well cooked and perfectly seasoned:
DRINKS
🍹 Sheeny Neeney: Refreshing with a slight tartness contrasted by sweet pineapple
🍷 Low Hanging Fruit: Light yet Tart.
FOOD
🧀 Whipped ricotta: Soft bread with a charred flavor, complemented by a slightly sweet ricotta with herbed oil.
🌽 Crispy Polenta: Crispy with a nice char, topped with a creamy goat cheese atop a romesco sauce.
🥔 Plancha Smashed Potatoes: Creamy potatoes with a slight crispness, served with a slightly spicy harissa creme fraiche and chorizo chili oil, and chives. The chorizo flavor really comes through.
🥕 Charcoal Roasted Carrots: Served with a brown butter hazelnut sauce with roasted chili and goats cheese, These were my favorite side – Sweet, slightly smoky, a little heat, and a creamy tangy finish from the goat cheese.
🐷 Tomahawk pork: Served with a tomato-cherry chutney and a charred lemon to squeeze over it. It was rich and tender, yet bright. It was sweet and savory. A very well balanced dish.
🥩 Grilled Ribeye Steak: If you order nothing else, order this! Topped with red chimichurri, confit garlic, and harrisa, it was also sweet and savory. It’s very garlicky, with just the right amount of salt. Squeeze the charred lime on it and it was perfection! My absolute favorite dish we tried. I loved everything but I’d make a trip back just for this steak.
