Bikini Atoll: From Paradise to Nuclear Test Site | FULL DOCUMENTARY

July, 1946. Bikini. It was the first of 23 nuclear tests the US government made in their race against the Soviets during the Cold War.

A remote atoll in the Marshall Islands, set in the vast blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean between the Philippines and Hawaii. Ironically though, it was this isolation, that sealed the atoll’s fate: During “Operation Crossroads” in July of 1946, two atom bombs were used to sink a ghost fleet of 84 vessels, destroying the natural environment and leaving parts of the huge atoll ring permanently contaminated in the process. The islanders are still reliant on imported food even today.

The American armed forces singled out Bikini Atoll as the place to detonate the first atomic bombs since Nagasaki. They assembled a huge fleet of decommissioned warships to be sunk in the most dramatic way possible. It wasn’t just about testing the destructive power of the bombs though; at the outset of the cold war, they were also seeking to make an impression on the Soviet Union.

  1. Given the amount of funding provided to this expedition(judging by equipment) that is one extraordinarily poor documentary. Oozing with cheap sensationalism aimed at emotional housewives, that have no clue(and never will thanks to this “documentary”) about either history, or the nuclear weapons, or the policies that made Operation Crossroads possible…

  2. Enough with the melodrama. It was known at least by the 90s that the seawater had effectively neutralized any radioactivity left behind by the experiments as far as what remained underwater. There were also sailors on some of those ships who were interviewed about their struggles to get their involvement in the missions declassified so that their related medical claims could be properly addressed. The residents of the Atoll have long been known to have elevated levels of cesium due to its structural similarities to potassium, which the vegetation that they relied on for food readily absorbed. I see no point in hanging around for a recap comprised of the same tired fluff with a scattering of relevant facts strewn in.

  3. Saratoga (who carried the fleetwide nickname 'Striped Stack Sara' for her distinctive identification on her stack (to differentiate her from her sister, Lexington)). Decided she did NOT want to die! After being anchored out (with FOUR anchors), 12 hours before the tests, she started to DRAG HER ANCHORS AGAINST WHAT WAS PRESUMED TO BE PREVAILING WIND AND TIDE! She was supposed to be 1500 meters away from ground zero (a mile), it was later determined she was somewhere between 500-700 meters!

  4. For the investors out there:

Xi Jinping, “Power Must be Caged by the System”, Qiushi, January 22, 2013:

“We should continue to catch “tigers” as well as “flies” when dealing with cases of leading officials in violation of Party discipline and state laws as well as misconduct and corruption problems that directly affect the people’s interests. All are equal before the law and Party discipline; whoever is involved in a corruption case must be thoroughly and impartially investigated.”

The results, after 11 years of Xi’s anti-corruption campaign?

    “Corruption is RAMPANT in China!”

  5. So the plutonium's halving time is 24100 years and it's not there any more, because the radiation level is low.
My next question is: where it is now? What effect we all have because these weapon tests?
Why the US and the other nuclear capable nations not pay compensation to the whole world for the economic damage they have done?
And I should pay fine because I threw the palstic bottle into the generic waste?!

  6. The radiation has been swept away but to where ? The persistent mutation on the sharks is the first documented case but how many undocumented ? I believe the root of many environmental issues today could have links to these tests.

  7. What complete BS.
If you care about this subject do your research. These people are probably trying to get more grant money. They are fearmongering.

Be thankful these tests were done. You are alive today because of the program.
