Underbrush should absolutely be cleared responsibly, but it should still be cleared. What extreme environmentalists fail to realize is that if that underbrush catches fire that will hurt the wildlife there infinitely more than if it's cleared by people in a non-haphazard way.

I work for a government agency and we can't do our job making fire breaks because of NEPA, the sierra club and other environmentalists put so much red tape on us it can take a decade to get a fuel treatment plot signed off. Even then, it's such a drop in the ocean it doesn't even matter. Making 5 acre fire breaks 6 months at a time because we also have to fight fires but make the fuel breaks. It's an impossible task, I'm sorry to say.
