I saw this in theaters in 1978 & 1979, about 7 times in as many months (back then, since home video was just beginning and hadn’t become standardized yet, if a movie was really popular, it stayed in theaters for months on end), and it really changed my life. I was 12 years old and I already loved movies quite a bit, but with this film, as well as the Star Wars films, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977), and many similar films, I became an absolute movie NUT. I also bought the John Williams score on vinyl double LP and listened to it endlessly.

    Unfortunately I was very disappointed with SUPERMAN II (1981), and SUPERMAN III (1983) wasn’t any better, either. What made this movie really work was an excellent screenplay, very sharp casting, and Richard Donner’s outstanding direction. The other films didn’t have those things.

  6. I loved seeing the enthusiasm she had for the story and characters. While I'm not a huge fan of comic books or most of the movies stemming from them, I can't help but love this movie and the Superman Reeves gives us. He was perfect for the role. In my opinion at least.

  7. Fun fact- Christopher Reeve was very skinny when he took the role. Instead of wearing a padded suit like they wanted him to, he took a very intensive workout regimen and was trained by David Prowse, a bodybuilder famous for physically playing none other than Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy. Reeve said Prowse put him through hell, but it worked out perfectly.

  10. Traditionally Clark would change into Superman in a phone booth. As the full size booths were disappearing they made a joke of the open design pay phone leaving him to improvise. The Krypton wardrobe was made entirely of the highly reflective material ordinarily used in narrow strips on firefighter's jackets. When a strong direct light is shone on it the camera reads it as being fully illuminated from within. In an ordinary light it just appears as a dull gray.

  11. You have to watch and do a video to Superman 2! He fights Zod and his gang that we see at the beginntof the first movie! They have an epic battle with practical effects. I feel its better than this movie. Also have you seen the Batman begins/Chris Nolan trilogy? Gotta watch those, and yes, Michael Keaton Batman 1 and 2. Fantastic

  13. I love this movie so much. This and Superman II are still arguably the best two superman movies ever made. I did love "Man of Steel" as well. I can understand why some people didn't like it, but I liked some of the concepts they had in that film that they explored that were never explored in previous Superman movies like Superman feeling like an outsider and whatnot. I just think some of the creative choices they made in the film ruined it for most people. Plus, I've noticed that apart from the first two Superman movies with Christopher Reeves, the rest of the Superman films afterwards either didn't feature the romance between Lois and Superman/Clark Kent well, or it was outright marginalized and/or downplayed completely due to behind the scenes drama preventing them from exploring that romance further, or script issues. I'd go further into it, but I don't want to give away spoilers. But the point is I feel like Superman's relationship with Lois Lane is a key essential element to Superman's story first and foremost. If you can't get that right, then any superman story you tell is going to struggle. As much as I loved "Man of Steel", one of my main gripes about that film is that I felt they rushed Lois' relationship with Superman to the point that you don't get the emotional impact of their relationship as you did with this film. Hence, why it's partially not as well received among other reasons, but still.

    I think if Gunn wants his superman movie to do well, he needs to make sure the relationship between Superman and Lois is solid because that's a key essential element to Superman's story imo. From what I've seen of the trailers, it seems like he's going to deliver on that, which I hope is the case because we need this Superman movie to do well for the DC brand and Superman brand itself to do well into future generations.

  18. This movie and the movie immediately after it completely blew people away in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Together, those movies make a case that Superman is extremely interesting. They oppose the idea that Superman is unrelatable.

  19. I loved your reaction to this movie. It was my first reaction to you and i enjoyed your enthusiasm, interest, and comments. You have a wonderful personality, you're intelligent with a great sense of humor and laugh, and you're just as beautiful as can be. I don't mean that in an kind of creepy way. You just seem like a delightful young lady. I subscribed and will be watching more of your reactions for sure! I agree with you on the use of practical sets and effects. They really do put you in the story and add a touch of authenticity. I don't enjoy movies today when they go into CGI overload. It's terribly distracting and detracts from the story and the acting. To me practical is better, but then I'm an old man. Christopher Reeve was a very good actor. This Superman was one of 2 Superheros that served as role models for me as a child. I didn't have a father figure to look up to. One of my favorite movies had Christopher Reeve in it and the stunningly beautiful Jane Seymour. It's a beautiful movie called "Somewhere in Time." It was considered a box office bomb but not because it was a bad movie. Movie critics trashed it but then i have a mind of my own and don't give a rip what those hacks say about movies. "Somewhere in Time" has since become a widely beloved movie, and rightly so, by audiences. Everything about it is beautiful. I hope you'll react to it one day. Do have some tissues handy though.   20. The first sequel to this movie, Superman II, is fairly excellent. The rest of this movie series, Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest For Peace get worse and worse. But, if you are a major fan of this franchise (I am) they can be entertaining.

    Been following you since you started.
    Lots of reactors are tiresome after one watch and do lots of things poorly, wrongly, annoyingly.
    You, however are my favorite person online…..intelligent viewpoints, observations and valuable critiques….plus charisma that's totally not forced with a genuine love for storytelling and cinema, well spoken with great expression of your thoughts….and not to be superficial but natural beauty that floors me. If you snapped your fingers I'd drop to the floor and kiss your feet with passion and respect….after first giving you flowers and a large box of chocolates.

  39. You are 200% right that this movie makes the right call, taking the time showing Clark's upbringing. People sometimes complain that movies spend too much time on the origins, but the origins are all-important. Who they are when they're ordinary people, tells you everything about who they are when they're heroes.

    By the way, if you can watch "Superman and Lois" (which just ended), I think you'll enjoy it. For my money, that is the new standard by which to measure one's Supermans and Clark Kents.
